Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Raise outside of promotion?

Corporate IT Comrades:

I have been in my role for less than a year so I’m not eligible for a true “promotion.” Plus, we all know getting a promotion right when you’re eligible is never going to happen. However, I have been doing well above my job description for that entire time and that has even been acknowledged by many people leaders in and adjacent my team.
Due to the fake “we are broke” story when bonuses came out, I barely got anything from it despite meeting the max threshold.
All of this to say, I know I’m being paid $10k-$20k less than my peers that have the same job title plus I’m doing above and beyond that.
Is there any way to negotiate/demand a higher salary right now? Due to my personal situation, applying to new jobs to play hardball isn’t really an option right now.
I want to stay at centene but I want to be paid fairly.

Being super passive and brown noseing is really the only way to even be thought of moving up. They want to walk all over you then have you not mention it at all of what you know they are doing. Most of their leaders su-k and are kiss ups to their managers too, just sickening.

You just got a promotion and now you want a raise on top of a raise? Good luck telling your leader how you KNOW your peers making more than you and good luck explaining why you deserve more than them without taking what they bring to the table. Guess they should just let them all go since you can do it all.

It’s good to think highly of yourself but you JUST got promoted which gave a raise and you have not come back to explain how you “know” these other folks making more than you so be prepared to present that with your request…. Or I mean.. “demand”

@m3 lol, not from HR, just been around the block a few times and OP sounded young, possibly first corporate job out of college.

They are more than welcome to "demand" a higher salary less than a year into their position and just after the annual review.

But how many years have these peers been with the company, they may have been going over and beyond in their first few years in order to secure reputation and pay raises.

What previous experience did they bring with them when they were first hired at centene or transferred from privouse department to the current department?

There are several factors that go into starting pay when hired and several factors during yearly evaluation and merit raises.

It sounds like you are doing a great job and are just newer to the team. If you feel like you have a fair and supportive manager have conversations with them about future promotion availability, but tread lightly about "demanding" or "playing hardball" as you say. It sounds like you and the department are still "dating" and making an ultimatum about a "ring and marriage proposal" so early might scare them off from wanting to "marry" you in the future.

hard to negotiate but i got a 10% equity adjustment last year as I could not be promoted but org wanted to retain me

I would lay out all the facts to your manager and ask for an equity review. I’ve had a couple of these conversations in the past. One time the answer was “our hands are tied but we’ll address it in your next promotion”, but another time it turned into a positive equity adjustment. Gather all your facts and documentation ahead of time. There may be headwinds given the current climate, but I think it’s still a good conversation to have. Either way you’ll have your answer, and equity adjustments do happen time to time. Good luck!

A raise above 10%? Will need to be justified by a comp board (or at least mine did a few years back).

Scale back the work you're doing, start looking elsewhere - and yes, the job market is awful right now.

Oh my word....good luck with that. This company absolutely will not negotiate a "pay raise" and it's your manager that needs to ask for it & justify it and even then your chances are slim to none. They don't care what the market pays or what/if other people are being paid on your team. Stop doing more than is expected or they will continue to walk all over you and insist on taking more from you the more you give. DOING MORE GETS YOU NOWHERE IN THIS COMPANY. The only thing that seems to get anyone anywhere is nepotism and brown nosing, and if that's your bag have at it.
