They will find a way to make sure you do not meet the expectation

Relax, you got one IM. You will be fine. It's not the end of the world unless you make it as such.

I got an IM in 2023 year end and I'm still here. No pay cuts, no losses on bonus, nothing.

Was exeeds/meets for decades here, now at retirement age. First IM.
I expect to be gone by mid year.

I had an IM at midyear. Displaced 2 months later. Once you have an IM, you are the "easy mark" for the manager to give someone and exceeds, and you, the IM, get the NI and the door. Its the curve, can't avoid the curve. And since you got an IM, well that should be notice enough for you that you are on your way out. Like it or not. Shart will have his quota HC reduction.....

Had one IM end of 2024, laid off right before midyear review was scheduled. Look for another job.

You should work with your manager and be very clear on what you need to accomplish by mid-year to meet expectations.

It will happen before mid year. So 3 months

Most people rated IM don’t make it to the next rating period. Mid year rating cycle opens in May for self evaluation. If you know you can find another job then hold out for severance. If you get a second IM you’ll be placed on a PIP and fired for cause with no severance. I took my IM as a sign to leave, finding a new job takes a lot of time in today’s market. Do you really want to stay working for a company who undervalues you and hoped to bully you into quitting or being fired? I left while I still had enough pride and mental health to interview successfully.

@OP if you get 2nd IM next time (mid-year?), there will NOT be a third. Plan accordingly.
