Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Scharf's Plan...

By forcing the cost of severance down from "top of house" to the division/unit level Scharf is deliberately incentivizing managers to give unwarranted poor reviews to good people so that they can be fired "for cause" with no severance, no cost to the bank. While callous, cold and calculating, it's perfectly legal.

Scharf knows that Secretary of Treasury Bessent and President Trump are pushing hard to deregulate banking which directly impacts staffing at all banks. By eliminating the CFPB and loosening regulatory oversight, employees whose duties include this funciton are no longer needed because the people they answer to in the government agencies are gone.

WF is removing coordination roles in a way that purposefully avoids the visibility that normally accompanies large layoffs. WF distributes reductions in smaller groups across several sites — for example, eliminating roles in increments of 40 or 45 across different regions over several months. None of these individual events reaches the WARN Act threshold that would require public disclosure. Challenger, Gray & Christmas refers to this as the pattern of "forever layoffs" — ongoing workforce optimization rather than discrete restructuring.

The weakening of worker protection enforcement — reduced CFPB oversight of employment-related financial products, reduced NLRB enforcement capacity, weakened EEOC investigation resources — makes this quiet, distributed layoff approach less legally risky for banks. The institutional deterrent against conducting large-scale reductions in ways that might constitute systematic discrimination or age-based targeting has weakened alongside the broader regulatory rollback.

@ej Yeah the new mantra is "complete your paperwork on time" even if its pointless TPS reports that should all blow away.

It seems like I'm always the countercurrent trend-bucker here, but despite getting an IM this year, my group salvaged a job for me (admittedly there's not a great track record of this panning out with WF, but they sent me where there was actual need instead of creating something) and my manager immediately got to work putting my name out front and center to get my value on upper management's radar.

As always, YMMV

All I know is I was told in my first one-on-one after annual review is that we do not want to be at the bottom of any of our performance matrices this year or there will be consequences. I’m sure that has always been the case, but the message delivered was clear. I have always been a meets or exceeds for ten+ years, not like I have been a problem on my team. AI or not, I 100% believe there is definitely a different vibe this year.

It has always been at the unit level. Each unit (if applicable) is given a save target and they have to hit it. The top of the house doesn't say the entire bank needs to save X now go and figure it out. It's each unit is given a target.

@a6 that was all once true but not anymore. all of a sudden it's two IMs and you're out, thanks to shart pushing severance costs down. the fact that DEI has fallen out of favor has also helped make senior leaders less worried about firing people for cause.

@aw I assure you I did not use AI to write my rant! @ab I know what insane is and have no problem with reality. Believe what you want because you drank the kool-aid or you are one of the sick bullies perpetrating this cr-p. I am not the only one posting about this. Righteous justice will come or karma whatever you believe.

AI has allowed paranoid lunatics to 10x their self righteous ranting. It's a game-changing technology.

@a6. I would like you to explain what long list of issues? I was terminated for IM's and given those IM's to justify others who received promotions and large bonuses. The detail was all subjective made up sh-t in my reviews. They even went so far as giving me corrective actions for retaliation and 1 small error that was fixed in process and not my fault. I was gas-lit being told my work was the best, but bottom of stack and pay. Manager controlled the metrics by pushing back unnecessary things to fake metric and drive me out. This mgr has a history of laying off people in their 60s. I was treated the worst because of proximity and ease of harrasing me to the point of losing my ability to stand up for myself. The entire leadership team was systematically poisoned against me by fake 360 reviews. I tried to leave but everything done ruined my reputation. Even past collegues who knew I was great at my work were shut down. I was asked to give fake 360 review on others over 60 and when I refused I was black listed. I complied with all the other expectations, never missed deadlines, never had audit errors and everytime I sent proposals and my work was stolen and given to others. Do not tell me it is not happening because many people have reported this. I would need to write a book, because there is too much that this post cannot include.

This post is bot-level bs.

True no-severance displacements are exceedingly rare.

To get severance you sign an agreement not to sue. its not truly severance.

WF is almost all cases is not firing for performance reviews unless you have a very long history of poor performance and other issues are going on. Way too much fear mongering on this board. If youre being fired, they have a long list of other documented issues outside of your performance appraisal. This fake narrative is creating so much unnecessary fear.

Stack ranking is not here to fire you because youre forced into IM.
