Getting Fired for IM

guys, it seems this thing is serious .

I was going through Reddit and reviewing some past post from this forum.

It seems when you get inconsistent meet IM , they can fire you and they don’t even need to initiate any PIP(improvement plan)

I mean fire , not layoff - so no severance.

@vh This is why managers are increasingly distrusted. Why did you give 2 IM's in a row? I'm sure there are some cases where this is truly valid, but mostly it's just toxic bullsh-t indicative of bad management at all levels.

I worked with a person who gamed the system SO hard and management never listened when I tried to explain how they were doing this. On paper, they basically looked like they were 5x their peers, but they weren't. They absolutely were 5x the metrics though. So this dishonest and dispicable person, an expert at theatrics, was safe, while others who were just as competent and and hard working got sh-t on.

Fu-k this place. Fu-k management.

I'm also a manager and was required to terminate an employee upon giving her the 2nd improvement needed rating. No warning at all. It wasn't my choice. If you get an improvement needed rating and want to protect any long term incentive, it might be best to leave the company before the next performance rating cycle.

@fp it contained subjective weak comments and no real examples because it is allowed and no one in HR or up the chain care because mgrs are following marching orders to set up long time older employees.

This is definitely happening. I’d suggest printing all your previous performance reviews and taking them home.

@dp I simply don’t understand how a rating can be all positive without a word of negativity, top team performer, etc, only for it to be IM

manager told me the same in my annual review. 2+ consecutive IM will get you canned

@b5 and others who do not believe it happens. I got IM for 22, 23 & 24. The language in PR were vague and not indicative of a true assessment needed to show IM. I was told IM was a "good rating". I reached out to HR because I never reveived anything below "meets" ever and they did nothing when I disputed. After being fired before YE 2025, I asked for "investigation" which also resulted not in my favor even though I was told my work was best on my team by my mgr. I was told in the termination notice I was being terminated based on 3 yrs of IM. If you are saying that is not policy...then why am I now unemployed and at risk? My conclusion, a manager can put any subjective comments they want and no one questions it. HR is only there to check the box.

@ay this is what I would say about that, as an HR employee involved in a lot of discussion around this subject. You can’t push a narrative that “meets” is a very strong rating, and simultaneously say that someone who is a level below a very strong rating should be considered for termination for performance.

If we want to rewrite performance criteria and definitions, the door has to swing both ways.

I’m a manager of a team of 20~, and anyone on my team who has been Inconsistently Meets for two years in a row is currently being reviewed for reasons to term. This is real, and even though I strongly disagree in almost every case, it’s been made very clear that while I can make my case for them, it’s ultimately not my call.

@av

I don't doubt that and I hate to be blunt but most of these people (and/or their job) is replaceable. We know offshoring is a priority, so why is someone surprised their back office job is cut or in India? If you're not a client facing employee, you are more than likely to get fired with a bad review.

@as

that was my understanding before too, that IM and NI is just maybe cut some of your bonus.

But the recent chatter on Reddit and this forum shows they are firing people for IM and NI.

If it was one chat, then maybe a troll, but it seems I am seeing that info everywhere now.

OP is simply trying to scare people for god knows why. So many people at this bank have had multiple IM ratings and are still here, receiving bonuses and comp increases.

How many people on this site are front office employees? I would bet almost none. So yeah, if your worthless back office job gets cut, that su-ks but so be it. This company has way too many people doing nothing, in worthless jobs like some of the people on here. I hate corporations as much as the next guy but WF has too many employees.

Downvote away beacause you know I'm talking about you. Just know having a job is not a right.

because half of you are actually disposable and deserve those poor ratings. Instead of the ones arbitrarily placed there due to bs calibrations.

That’s what I heard that they didn’t plan any budget for severance while expect high attrition rate! You think how this works out!

Well. No severance means if they are using these performance ratings just to leverage firing people then they have nothing to lose by hiring an attorney. I would think in some cases it is pretty obvious they are targeting people unfairly. I have heard of a lot of people getting IM due to RTO not meeting the requirement Hours/days.

This is true. If you are let go for poor performance, then no severance needed. It's a termination, not a layoff.

It is getting scary.
Suddenly layoff is now a luxury and privilege.

Suddenly, you are happy to be laid off , rather than been fired.

I think it’s part of agile. Forced rankings to have the employees crazy working and creating a high performance team and then of course burn outs and then they will leave because nobody likes doing three times the work
