Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Now that slimy DA is gone

Maybe we can call out that bringing Adobe into Nike was a TERRIBLE idea. What a waste of tens of millions of dollars.

Everyone involved with that decision should be fired, fired, fired.

It ki-led innovation and slowed us down.

Wouldn’t be surprised if there were shady deals around it.

How is building Nike’s own outdated version of Adobe’s CDP and reporting going? Did Databricks turn out to be 100x cheaper than Adobe’s stack just because the network payloads were compressed? The world’s largest software company and the world’s largest cloud computing company both use the same Adobe stack that Nike thought wasn’t bleeding edge enough. Surely a few mid TPMs and a handful of disgruntled engineers in exurban Portland can efficiently out-build Adobe, Databricks, SAP, and every other platform used by every other S&P 500 enterprise. That didn’t work? Maybe just try selling shoes again? Nope, let’s offshore our proprietary tech debt swamp to India! Cost savings accomplished, executive bonuses paid out.

@b3 Nah, it's we-ponized incompetence it's not innocent. It's either the team or leadership's doing because they couldn't properly vet friggin engineers and their relatives.

How does that incompetent MM still have a job at Nike? The worst tech leader if there ever was one.

@an Two white CEOs - JD and EH have destroyed / are destroying Nike. And our co-founder PK is su-king up to GOP+Trump and is being slapped with tariffs. But sure, let's blame Indians.

That guy was so self absorbed. One of the most selfish, backstabbing, people at Nike.

Structured the tech org horribly. Created levels that should have never existed.

Seriously, name ONE good thing that fool ever did. He moved Nike back about as much as JD.

How many people did he fire along the way?

Glad that trash is behind us now.

Now he can go find another company to wreck.

@aq engineers not optimizing for compute is not a shady deal problem. It’s bad engineering. I see to ALL the time with teams. Not their money they don’t care.

Everyone who was part of that I think all did get fired or left. That was JD and RL along with brand leadership. Can’t remember their names in Brand but one was a VP. I’m close with people who were in GaME and heard the deal now is 10000x better than the original with huge cost takeout and MD took the credit for it which sounds right. I can say from experience though (as usual) we changed strategies and don’t use it all….again. Good luck with whoever works on these things for the next one! Makes me glad to be an engineer.

Bro, that's not the only shady deals going. Cough, cough, cough everything on data 🧱, or something like that. Because let's pay extra for compute whenever we can!

Unethical Indian immigrants have been stealing from Nike for a long time. Nothing new here.

I joined in early 2023 and been hearing about the Adobe deal since day one. I still don’t know what it is and at this point it’s too late to ask.
