Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

job security

i am deeply concerned and worried as a vague generalist jumping every few years across unrelated roles.

like a feather drifting through the wind, with zero control and zero influence, completely at the mercy of the gods above

i gotta get out of here but im stuck

As d-mb and as much as it makes NO sense whatsoever...

The key to keeping your job is to be good at it but not TOO good. The experts or senior level guys have the most visibility by managers, directors, etc... and get paid a lot but, they for some reason are usually more likely to be let go than a mediocre but good employee.

Stay right in the middle. Do a good job, do your job. be civil with everyone and don't make enemies or whatever. Be easy to work with, do favors here and there. Get in good with a handful of managers and that's all you gotta do to stay out of the "radar."

Those who get laid off are almost always senior folks, those who've been there for 15+ years, are older than 50, and then the bottom of the barrel people who contribute nothing at all.

@aq Very true. Some of the most successful people were the poseurs that knew enough about everything from engineering to finance so they could spout the buzzwords and acronyms and people would think they were geniuses. So much so they get promoted to that level of management where they get reassigned every couple of years in an effort to maximize their effectiveness.

Sometimes companies don’t survive this type of person.

but if we keep things vague, we can hide behind obscurity and avoid any real responsibilities while getting paid! manual hard coded excel files web and word of mouth silos keeps the bills paid and food on the table

I think you're safe, dell loves vague generalists and hates experts.

You sound like me. I’m good at a little of everything from PM/PO to writing code in a variety of software related disciplines, but not good enough to compete with top talent in any one of them. In this market top talent are the only ones getting jobs. Them a--kissers and nepo babies.
