Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

What about previously scheduled holiday vacations?

I have international vacation trips for Thanksgiving and Christmas already approved and non-refundable airline tickets purchased. If I'm not on the list I assume I will not be claiming the vacation days and will get extra pay for the vacation days not claimed.

What if I am not selected but half my team is?

@a5 when I was riffed a few years ago I was still expected to work through but was told to wfh. My peer on a separate team was told to not work anymore once he received notice since he was not going to look for another role within the company. My other colleague who took vsp was expected to work through his last day.

@aj no if your time is approved in VZ time they can’t take it back it’s already approved

@ae when you are riffed you are still expected to work through the last date so if you have approved pto and do not want to get paid out on those hours in addition to whatever unused pto you have then don’t cancel them. If you’d rather have more unused pto paid out then cancel the pto and just take the regular 3 days off

I was on a similar boat when I got laid off back 2 years ago. I had vacation approved 2 weeks after I got the call. I still took the time off anyway because I had already paid for everything. I did however attempt to land new roles during the time I was away and fortunately landed some interviews during that time it was. In your case if you are let go and if the last day on payroll is the week before Christmas you will get paid out separately for any un used pto time. I’m on a similar boat I’m approved for pto in December but will be opting out if I am riffed to save that as an additional check and just work through the remainder of the days

@ag Probably I did not state the question as clearly as possible. If I get layed off I could care less what the company says. My question is what if I do not get cut but the people who would normally be my backup are cut? What if my AD that approved the vacation time is also cut? Will the company cancel all previously approved PTO for the week of Thanksgiving as part of this process?

Take your vacation. You either get to go enjoy your trip on your pre-approved vacation or cancel your trip pay the penalties and get paid out the same vacation you were already pre-approved for. If you get riffed you’re still on the payroll for 30-60 days. What a d-mb question.

Similar question. I am off 3 days during thanksgiving week. If I am RIF, can I still take the vaca and take those 3 vaca days off my timesheet?

@a6 I'm in a Pre-sales role. All my customers take vacation during the holidays. Many have freeze periods where no changes can be made to their networks. How does that make me "non-essential"? I used to be in Ops and working Tier 2/3 issues for the largest customers. Then I moved to Sales. Guess which role Verizon leadership considers the more essential. It's not Ops.

i'm in the same boat. I'm going to pay the airline refund penalty.

If you’re able to take vacation over the holidays you are absolutely not “essential”

If rif'd can we cancel the vaca days to get the payout, or do they have to be canceled in advance of rif to get payout?

The person who posted how it's going down a few times sid that if rif'd, the only "duties" one would have are regarding the transition, so presumably you could still go on the vacation and not have to use your vaca days

If you're VRIP'd and take your vacation days I'd assume you won't be paid out by Verizon for that as unused time.

If you're in a financial bind you can attempt to resell your tickets on the secondary travel market.
