@an the people from downstream that are in upstream basically run upstream like a refinery (like DW does) and are running it to failure just like a refinery. We just haven’t had the failure yet.

So downstream is dominated by chemist and chemical engineers. Upstream is full of geologist and mechanical engineers. It will be a fight of epic proportions. Get some popcorn and enjoy the battle. The hunger/squid games are getting new players. It is going to be like throwing two different colonies of ants together. I feel bad for all the new hires they will be the first to fall. Trust no one and beware the first line and second line supervisors. It is like a train wreck or natural disaster.
If you are NOT a Chemical engineer, you are sc--wed. Downstream and Chemicals are dominated by Chemical engineers. CHE generally has the highest SAT scores of all engineering, so they are smarter than ME, CE and PETE. You better understand mass balance, energy balance, organic chem, physical chem (quantum mechanics) and thermo (of hydrocarbons)...not Steam
@OP Reduced headcount, either in the form of outright layoffs or a more aggressive PIP policy.

Upstream makes all the money and has the smarter personnel… so they will likely be the senior in any partnership. D/s can be assessment cannon fodder.
What you don’t seem to understand is that all these decisions are made by the management team regardless of what value you think US or DS brings. The Leadership team is dissembling the organization and downsizing and off shoring. The cuts and rationalization won’t stop until the stock price suffers or there is a major incident. Maybe y’all are putting the blame in the wrong place.
In projects, we merged upstream and downstream years ago… it has almost ruined projects.
In the US, there was a reason we paid downstreamers less… almost no critical thought, no ability to make decision, it is awful having them on our teams.
However, the good news is they are good fit for our new India Tech center. So, that will make that transition easier.
Upstream is absolutely f’d. Downstreamers think we are id--ts and will apply a million KPIs and micromanage us and drive opex down until something breaks. Just hope someone realizes that upstream make all the money and downstream name square root of nothing on a margin business
Upstream is sc--wed. Downstream is way more toxic and vicious. I worked for both and I could not stand the downstream employees. Moving to downstream was the end of me so I retired. Downstream wants to control and wield its powers over everyone and everything. In upstream we never had first line supervisors as this was a downstream position. Things are going to change for the worst trust me. The backstabbing and gossip are out of control in the downstream. We had it good for many years in upstream because the higher ups left us alone to do our work. We had no micromanaging supervisors to question everything we did. Long ago when I worked for EPR then URC I worked directly with the group I supported. We as a group were able to design , innovate and build cutting edge test equipment from the ground up. There is no more innovation or new ideas at exxon now.
