Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Confirmed FTE's on 1/29

Weird timing of the month. It appears that this layoff largely depends on VRP acceptance. They want to start the year by offloading a huge burden.

I've also heard that this is going to be a quarterly event for 2026. Has anybody seen any WARN report for their states? Just wondering if this is small or a huge one

@zv I was affected. Bummer. After so many years with the company. It is wide spread.

I know of 70+ voluntary and involuntary terms since 1/9.
This has been the pattern for over a year but really ramped up after the last VRP.
Definitely feels like they're shedding as many as they can.

@1qb i'd also like to note that my team is 1 FTE and rest is contractors, so not happening.

@1ph i just said our vendor has not been made aware of any layoffs of contractors, and I'm in conversations with the vendor management.

@1k2 I would say your company has been made aware now. Tech teams have told many this past week that they will be gone Jan 31 and to start passing their work to FT colleagues.

Do not think 1/29 including Tech since VRP just offered, right?

@119 my team itself almost reached that threshold at the end of 2025. Their last day was Dec 31. If every team is cutting then its possible. Although it seems unlikely that it’ll be 25% of the whole company.. that’s a lot

@154 i work as a contractor with a vendor and there’s no indication of this. I was told from higher up that there might be more shake ups in March/April but as for all contractor not true

@OP many are hearing its going to be a monthly event. This might be strategy to keep off Warn list.

I've heard from several people now that many contractors will be gone at the end of the month as well. Their initial end dates were supposed to be end of this year. Anyone else know anything?

What do traditional layoff packages look like (non VR)? How many weeks do they typically give employees that are lay off?

@11p when the stock is back to $325+

Does anyone know when this will calm down or stop? Everyone in my dept is either too tensed up to actually work or others are leaving for other depts. Unknowns everywhere.

They've been shedding on average 5-10+ people (voluntary and involuntary) since last years VRP went out.
And yes, I know this for a fact.

@zv is your source of information reliable? 25% cut, that’s total 25k workforce, including 10,000 employees and 15,000 contractors?

10,000 employees, and another 15,000 contractors, total 25k, out of 107k members in the Cigna group according to the workday, that gives 25% cut. I doubt that will happen, too much crazy!

@zv

How are you doing the math that 25% reduction is 10k layoffs? Last I saw workforce was 72k.

@me January 29 will be significant and yes they’ve been laying off for years but this is 25% of the word force enterprisewide you’re talking about 10,000 employees. It has nothing to do with the VRP. Please get your facts straight. This will impact every single organization in the company and with that comes reorganization on your team on my team and everybody else’s team. Just brace yourself because you might not be around next Friday.

@zs how soon before they reduce the two weeks per year to one year, or raise the $150k mark to $175k or $200k? I would say any that are on the fence, take it now.

@wf Being laid off is almost identical to VRP if you are not using the insurance.

JE's are going to happen no matter how many people accept VRP (they never expected all 5,000 to accept), the hope is to reduce number of JE's down the road, but the 1/29 JE's had to have been lined up by now, the acceptance date of 1/23 and JE date of 1/29 is too close for 1/29 to have relied on VRP response.

Related to the VRP package, I think it is a great idea, but they need to work on the package to make it more attractive it seems. Maybe 2 years COBRA subsidy and a higher minimum on the severance payout would help. Not sure what would make it a no-brainer for more people.

The question there is "How many of those that declined the VRP will be thrown into that bucket?".

Yes 1/29 will be a very big layoff day. There will be more in the following months but maybe not as big.

Early retirement packages were recently offered to 55 and older. They were less than spectacular and no one is really biting, so I feel layoffs are eminent. Which is ridiculous because honestly you make off better in being laid off than taking early retirement package.

@rf layoff maybe in addition to vrp...

@rf they are not waiting until June for layoff.. earlier the better.. expect major chunk to be complete by March and then continue the same old dialogue “we are done for the year, no more layoffs in this org”

@r8 that’s the capitalism! If there is no law to stop them, shareholders always choose profit, they care less where the profits come from. If India workers can bring them more profits legally, they of course will hire more people there.

@me so that means VR is march and june, and then after is when real lay offs happen if not enough VR?

@qf Not as long as the greedy shareholders need to be fed.

Do people really NOT know this? They have been laying off monthly for 2.5 years!!! Approx 150 give or take at a time . None of this is new. March layoffs are VR so is June. They will never WARN and what does it matter. It’s still happening. All HIH hiring and American layoffs.

Some people got VR that were 2 weeks of pay per years of service or what you get when you are laid off. Some people got a good bit more.

@aj they dont care about warn...if they did then they wouldmt have anounced layoffs on the townhall. Its going to be a public execution so all stock holders know costs will be cut in the immediate future

Cigna has a history of keeping it just under the number to avoid WARN.
They know how to play that game.

Quarterly is slightly better than the monthly layoffs of 2024. Cigna... laying off employees to increase revenue to provide value to its shareholders.
