Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Salary Transparency Thread

In full transparency, and in support of everyone trying to navigate the uncertainty right now, I think it could really help if we start sharing salary information. Having a clearer picture of compensation across grade levels and roles can empower all of us as we make decisions and advocate for ourselves.

If you’re comfortable, please share your grade level and salary as well. No pressure - only if you feel safe doing so. The more information we have collectively, the better we can understand where we stand.

We’re all trying to support each other through a really tough time, and transparency can make a huge difference.

@cq I was a grade level 28 when I got laid off making 98K, way underpaid and overworked, but yet told I needed to do more like my peers even though I already worked 70+ hours a week on the regular including being on call nights and weekends and working overnight sitting on phone calls.

SG30, $153k, 19k RRP, no RSUs since I became a 30, but I did receive as a SG29 (dif segment), just outside the TC metro so no RTO yet, almost 18 YOE

@de How?! That is off the salary chart for 28s!

@cn Yes, those are exactly the GL28s who would be on the high end of the range. When employees stay a long time at the company, they slowly migrate to the mid or low end of the range, and technical jobs pay more.

@dn Also a GL27, for the past 7.5 years (out of 11.5). 88K base. RRP varies. Averages $3500. While in office, worked in a high COL area. To keep what financial sanity I have left, moved to a slightly lower COL area a year ago.

@e5

I see Job reqs within the company for my grade level and same skill set with advertised bottom salary range is 20% higher than what I am making. I have applied for such positions and get rejected. I assume because I am onshore and there is an admitted on-shore hiring freeze ... or age discrimination? I can't be performance related as I have history of excellent reviews. I'm sure others on this board have had the same experience.

It’s interesting seeing everyone share grades and ranges here — but a lot of people are drawing conclusions that don’t really line up with how comp works in big companies. Just because two people say they’re “G27” or “G29” doesn’t mean their pay should look the same. Grades aren’t one-size-fits-all.

A bunch of things influence pay within a grade:
• Geo market (pay in high-cost areas isn’t the same as the Midwest)
• Job family (clinical roles, tech roles, ops roles — all benchmark differently)
• Market data and how each role maps to it
• Tenure, internal equity, and scope differences

It doesn’t mean anyone’s lying — it just means the numbers don’t always translate cleanly across functions or locations.

What is interesting is the why behind this conversation. The fact that people are here comparing salaries tells you the emotional temperature inside the company: folks are unsure about the future and don’t feel like they’re getting enough clarity internally. So they’re trying to make sense of things externally.

This isn’t really about comp. It’s about trust and stability.

People wouldn’t crowdsource reality on TheLayoff if the internal messaging felt grounded, transparent, or aligned with what employees are experiencing. Between the tone of recent town halls and the general uncertainty about what’s coming next year, it makes sense that employees are looking for any kind of signal they can get.

If leadership wants to get ahead of this, it’s not about hiding numbers — it’s about showing they understand the climate people are actually living in. Right now there’s a disconnect, and this whole thread is basically a symptom of that.

If you really want transparency, go into Global Self Service and pretend to open a req for your job code. The 2nd page will give you your range for what they would pay a new person in your role. You should’ve between the 25%-75% mark depending on MAP rating and tenure. If you had been with the company a long time you WILL BE under paid. I am 25% below the emerging zone for my role, which is disgraceful but not uncommon.

Where are these GL28’s making over $140k? Are they relatively recent hires in some high cost of living area and some sort of data scientist type role? I manage many GL27-29’s as a GL30, and that seems way out of line for my area at least. Clearly the rest of us are getting hosed then.

Nonsense! With the acquisitions and pay standards across all the different companies OI is a hodgepodge of companies. Also comparing pay is ALWAYS an activity leading to pi-s you off. A troll started this thread.

You can't really compare just the GL it also depends on what your Job Code / Job Family is. A GL 28 in Data Analytics or Software Engineering will always be higher than a GL 28 in the Claim or Call departments.
