I'm in tech. Involuntarily moved to a different team with an entirely different stack for the year. Umm I don't know how to code in their language. I'm expected to just start contributing right away. Like... What? So I have busted my a-s for years here, fixed tons of other peoples' mistakes to keep the lights on before anyone in BL can notice. Always good reviews. Sure people don't like my personality sometimes but you know what I always deliver. If I lead a project it completes on time and on budget while others flail around & never deliver. I've not been promoted in years & my career has stagnated - now this. Go code in this totally unfamiliar stack & fail at it & then come back later to my original team? It's fcking insulting af, there's no way I'll last that long, I'm set-up to fail. This place is so demoralizing & dehumanizing I should have bolted long ago but now... The economy is so flooded by laid-off Americans due to Indian replacement & outsourcing to India (& they only hire other Indians, happened to me even internally wheh I foolishly tried to help myself to move-up) I'll likely never be an engineer again or have any kind of financial security. This su-ks. It's worse for the MANAGERS they picked for this who are now listed as line engineers on the project. I can't even imagine their headspace right now. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO CODE THIS OTHER TEAM'S PROJECTS WTF. I'm going to try to make it work by focusing-on aspects of their tech I do know, but jesus this is senselessly stressful & I can't help but look at it as anything other than pushing me out by claiming I couldn't contribute enough - because I don't know the fcking stack. Just outrageous shenanigans here. I'm so sc--wed.

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you. I've been re-orged and moved projects/teams more than I can count at this point. It's not just happening to you!
@ap yeah it's something like that. I guess I'm just frustrated & they're willing to work with me to lean-on my actual skillset which they also do need. It's the principle of goings-on that led me to posting this today. Probably overdramatic but I mean I am a human being & it's demoralizing to be pushed around like this. Everyone here 'gets it'. Thanks for the good advice too.
OP - I’m guessing you went from traditional Java/.NET/Python type of tech stack to a cr-p stack like Salesforce/Pega/Servicenow that is easier to offshore to India. Start interviewing for another job with your current traditional tech stack. Those new tools and cr-p stack aren’t true tech stacks and are built to devalue engineering expertise with vendor lock-ins. Our “leaders” don’t know any better and keep falling for it.
I’m sorry OP. I feel the same way. You aren’t alone. Like 2 pac said, keep yo head up!
I’ve debated going into trades or another discipline as my backup plan. It feels not matter of IF but WHEN. I’ve already accepted no kids, no marriage, no house, no vacations, aren't in the cards….. at least right now. It’s sad people have resorted to virtual panhandling on social media.
This is AI revolution is complete BS. It’s a buzzword that gen x and millennials leaders use to sound cool. Expensive, informational and trade secret risk, unproven, and would most likely require a complete overhaul of systems and processes……. No company big or small is going to be ginny pig….. at least…. look what happen to stellantis and ford going all in all EV. I think the higher people move up the corporate ladder, the d-mber they get. cough cough us bank leaders
This is basically NAFTA part II, but for white collar workers. AI is the excuse but that's not really achieving any operational efficiency. The executives are mad about the AI investment not really producing savings, but instead, it's become another expense, so they are offshoring or ramping up H1B visas. I left the Midwest in the 90s after NAFTA part I devastated the area. It never returned to the former glory. I lived through this before and moved across the country, never to return. This time, I'm not sure there's any ideal place to move to, unless it's out of the country.
They do this to folks outside of tech here too. Happened to me. A terrible feeling. Don’t let the unethical shenanigans of this company define your worth. I’m so sorry. It’s really hard, but has nothing to do with you and everything to do with toxic corporate America. .
Classic technology story here. Move people around so no one ever becomes an SME. Find a spot for everyone to make them miserable. Extinguish all happiness and job satisfaction.
@ac What else can you expect with an Indian CEO and CISO? Hopefully our dear President will add tariffs to Indian slave labor.
"The economy is so flooded by laid-off Americans due to Indian replacement & outsourcing to India"
This exactly. Everyone is worried about AI, but companies are using it as a smokescreen to just replace people with cheap oversees labor. I have never in my career seen such a push to get rid of engineers and replace them. I have never in my career seen so many people out of work or severely underpaid in engineering roles. Not during the dot com bust, not during the financial crisis. Every engineer I know is either freaked out or preparing to transition to a new career.
I'm sorry :(
