We need at least four days each week to recover from this place and what it puts us through on a daily basis.

Could be. Could also be:
They don't know what to really say back, or
They are just too busy with additional work, trying to save their own job.

I have noticed this. I've sent emails to survivors, saying that I enjoyed working with them and wish them well. A few respond. Perhaps they are afraid that layoffs are contagious?
Last year I came to the same conclusion but in result I changed the job as didn’t want to waste more my energy, time and patience for a frustrating senseless low paid work in stagnation. If you're not moving forward, you're falling behind.
Never used to be a problem for me until mgt changed and became a nasty sweat shop, oh maybe last 5 years or so. i do not miss it. oh and all the people you worked side by side with for 30 or so years, you get cut, they can't be bothered communicating with you.
Tell that to your manager and he/she will give you permanent vacation.
SIt sounds like you may not be cut out for corporate america. Perhaps try starting your own business so you can call your own shots?
