My boss scheduled a 30 minute meeting with my direct report tomorrow at 5. What could it be? Are they being laid off? Am I? My performance review is on next week, , could they just be getting their perspective on me? This is making me so nervous!

Just ask your boss what the purpose is!
Who works until 5? That sounds horrible.
Sounds like a skip-level meeting to me. They’re supposed to do them once or twice every year.
@a8 Yes, skip levels mean your boss skips you and speaks directly with your direct report. They say it is to keep a pulse on the team, check morale and really how the employees feel about their direct mgr/spvsr and the team. If you have a boss that is trying to get rid of you, like I did, they use it to manufacture issues to stack up against you.
Not to sound mean, but I think you should be concerned.
I am not monitoring their calendar. My boss shares their calendar with me.
@OP
Skip level.
Night gets laid off at 5p.
"Love is the answer" is what I write on every one of my reviews
Are you monitoring your teams calender? If you trust your people, dont micro manage them to death. I dont monitor my people as long as the work in getting completed on time and within quality guidelines.
It’s called a skip level meeting genius
Skip Levels?
It’s not their annual review, I will be doing the annual review for my direct report.
Annual review. Their annual review. Not yours. Not them talking about your annual review.
Each of us are tiny cogs in the UHG machine. You nor I are getting 30 minute meetings to discuss people's "perspectives" on us like we are main characters in a movie.
