There is a significant HR policy violation in the retail banking unit. District and branch managers are conducting "backdoor background checks" by calling applicants' current employers to solicit references. This practice is entirely unprofessional for U.S. Bank Management and creates an unacceptable risk by potentially exposing applicants' job search and placing their current employment in danger.

@OP Report it to the FTC and send the details to the major media outlets.
My hope is that heads roll for these actions. They called my manager’s manager when I was interviewing here. How do you think that made me look? My District Manager said that informal reference checks were standard at USB. Complete unethical behavior and they see nothing wrong with it.
When conference rooms at the corporate office were booked, the applicants' names were displayed publicly, which immediately compromised their job search confidentiality. This information quickly spread to current USB employees who had mutual acquaintances with the candidates
@ec I got the sarcasm and LOL'd at "sterling" ethics.
@ec I can't tell if this is sarcasm but you know we buy that award, right?
Everyone knows we have incredible ethics as a bank. We win an award every year for sterling ethics.
Ethics complaint will only result in a slap on the hand at best. Posting here was the right choice, so prospective applicants are aware of yet another reason to steer clear of this company.
@a8 right, call from a random place or phone number if needed. Maybe have a friend call that doesn't even work here
Contact the chief ethics officer. Oh wait.
@a5 well people can't be mad if they aren't willing to report it. Someone is going to have to report. Get creative with how you make the call to the hotline. Come on people. Report that sh-t. We need leaders to get scared of us.
Market Leaders and Recruiting management are aware of the ongoing behavior. Employees fear retaliation for reporting incidents. This creates an environment where issues remain unaddressed.
@OP report it on the ethics hotline and name names.
