Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Going into to an office to work with people not in the same office is d-mb

You all do realize most work from home people actually would go to an office if Verizon brought back our offices. I would but Verizon go rid of our building along with 20-30 other buildings over the last 10 years. My team is all over the country and no one lives in the same area... so going into a building to work virtually would be d-mb. Also, what is Verizon going to do fire all 12 people and keep 1 thats in a hub then backfill the 11 others or the 8 that are WFH? Its not as easy as you all think, getting rid of WFH or everything into a building would destroy workloads and knowledgeable assets already in place. Going into to an office to work with people not in the same office is d-mb, I thought all the climate change VZ activists would be protesting for protecting against my trucks carbon emissions going to an office anyways.

You must realize that going into the office isn't about culture or productivity right? It's simply a way to cull a few more people off the payroll without having to pay a package. It's also a test to see who the 'engaged' employees are, who wants to be part of the team.

I've not had a single person in my organization all the way up to the AVP try to defend it based on some intrinsic merit. I've only ever heard HR spew out the talking points. Tells you it's come from top down exclusively.

@a6

One key point missed here is that WFH keeps us far away from miserable buttlickers like you.

That's a huge benefit, believe me.

Good, give me 6-9 months notice and pay me a severance. Going into an office is a waste of time, I wouldn't want to socialize with other teams or even my own team. Just want to get my work done and leave. Its not high school, I have a social life outside of work.

And that’s why you will be relocating on your own dime or you will be finding a new employer. Get ready to move to beautiful NJ

@ac Yeah, tell that to Elon Musk — he must’ve missed the memo about the 21st century when he told everyone at Tesla and X that remote work was ‘no longer acceptable.’ Guess the guy who is successful building rockets and electric cars just doesn’t get how ‘evolved’ we’ve become

@a6 clearly you are a mo--n. Anyway, I work primarily with another telco who forced people into hubs on a pretty tight schedule. I swear to God no one there knows anything anymore, and the few that do are so overwhelmed and overworked it is ridiculous. It is poor people management.

@a6 Driving an hour and a half just to sit in an office and join conference calls with people in other states is the definition of wasted resources. It’s time to join the 21st century and accept that the way we work is evolving.

The sense of entitlement of WFH employees is exhausting.

1.most work from home people actually would go to an office: HA! — we’re struggling to get even hybrid employees who live near a hub back in the office. Let’s not kid ourselves that having a building nearby would suddenly fix the problem for WFH employees

  1. "My team is all over the country and no one lives in the same area" - And? That’s literally how corporate America functions. Not sharing an office with your team doesn’t make WFH a special case — plenty of cross-functional teams sit in hubs

  2. "what is Verizon going to do fire all 12 people and keep 1 thats in a hub then backfill the 11 others or the 8 that are WFH?" They can require critical employees to relocate within 6-9 months, RIF then outsource externally or move jobs overseas. The same happened with L&D

  3. "getting rid of WFH or everything into a building would destroy workloads and knowledgeable assets already in place" - Destroy workload”? That’s a stretch. Teams across corporate America are returning to offices without imploding .... maybe we just need to stop assuming in-person automatically equals chaos.

Outsourcing huge swathes of the company to overseas companies has destroyed the office culture and experience…along with Covid…who are we meant to collaborate with except via Webex? The leadership are trying to turn back the clock but they’re deluded

No but they can require all to relocate to a physical office
