Virtual here asked to relocate

Virtual here asked to relocate, But what’s with the layoff talk in June and July, when asked to relocate by October? Why will they layoff when they want you to relocate?

All Stank cares about is what the stock price is when he leaves. He admitted that. so because the only way he knows how is cutting people that’s what he will be doing until he leaves. The question is: when will he leave???

It is two different process. They are independent each other but the goal is same reducing head count. Moving does not means you are safe or in the laying off list. If moving people does not meet the number, they will start another process to laying off people. If you have good skills, you should start to looking another job otherwise you can choose to stay a little longer to move.

You are pretty much safe if you relocate. Or why even bother? Except if you are one of those conspiracy guys.

Do what I did, call there bluff and move temporarily ... Once the see you are moving they will lay you off after a short period of time and pay you your full severance. It dont cost a lot to hang out in an extended stay or even rent an apartment with the right lease break offer. It can be done.

“It is because you are too old and/or too expensive, but they can't legally lay you off for that.”
Or really just because you are a low value performer.

Relocating to a more expensive local with a new mortgage is not viable. It’s a numbers game. Most will quit and they know it. If you’re not expendable you won’t be forced to move.

You would only be surplussed if not performing in the role after moving or only doing the bare minimum

That might be their plan, but plans change. I had a VP get laid off and he didn’t see it coming. If it can happen to that level, it can happen to us

OP

You must have not worked here very long. T layoffs every month, it’s a revolving door. We are all just a number in this market driven culture. The CEO has formerly stated there is no loyalty.

If you move, you should try renting before you buy a home.

Being asked to relocate on your own dime IS being laid off. The problem is the reason they want to lay you off. It is because you are too old and/or too expensive, but they can't legally lay you off for that. What they can do legally is force you to move and watch you choose to lay yourself off. If that does not work, have no fear, they will get you on the far end in a year or two after they build up enough bad evaluations. In the dating world it is referred to as a sh1t test. If you agree to submit to the ridiculous request, you failed the test.

If being asked to relocate, team leadership is working to have members based out of a central location. They want to retain you. You would only be surplussed if not performing in the role after moving or only doing the bare minimum. It’s pretty rare to see someone laid off after moving. It gets over exaggerated by a lot of angry managers on this forum who have chosen not to move and want to influence others to make the same decision.

They dont want you to relocate. They want you to quit! This consolidation cr-p is just smoke and mirrors for a reduction in force. If you don’t take the bait and relo, they will just lay you off later on using some other shady excuse.
