Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

If you have the chance, transfer to FED.

Seriously.

Regardless of department you are in, find a way into the fed space and your life will be so much easier and you 100% are significantly less likely to be laid off.

Sales? It's a smaller team/group and the bulk of your money is made during FBS - which su-ks because you work longer and sporatic hours for a month.5 - but you have almost a guarenteed career long client as they are only Government agencies.

Tech support? Find a way into FIRST. Federal Incident Response Team. It's INTERNAL FED tech support to JUST fed employees and you can't be offshored like corp tech support can and there is no outside tech support bs. You ONLY deal with federal DELL employees.

IT? - It's a smaller environment, less complex, far fewer switches/routers/firewalls/etc... A much simpler IT environment through and through.

Managers - I mean, having been one in the past; I'd far prefer to manage 10 people versus 20? Considering every team in FED is quite small, anyways.

FED brings in a LOT of money to Dell considering the department size. We are valuable and not a single person can be offshored and 99% can't even be outsourced. Dell doesn't touch FED with layoffs 99% of the time as we are so small and, we are the last resort/option.

YES, people can and do get laid off in FED but it's far far FAR less likely than in literally any department on the corporate side.

Plus, you get a cool red badge!

@a5 Not really, though I suppose it would depend on which org you are in. I'm the opposite of micro managed. It's great. I felt much more micromanaged when I was on corporate tbh...

But Fed is TINY which can work for or against you. You get to know a LOT of people from various teams - managers, directors, etc... on more of a personal level and work closer with them as well. Again, could be a good or bad thing.

Fed is a close nit group and while we are behind technologically compared to corporate in regards to basically everything lol... It's FAR less stressful overall and, we can't be replaced by anybody overseas; which absolutely helps with job security.

The downside is that we are often given a much smaller budget to do things, less REQs for promotions and managers likely get less of a "bucket" to spend on raises. Though, I got a 12% last year so idk.

Also, the vast majority of layoffs are in sales and/or under the sales "umbrella." So yes, if you aren't in sales and in fed, you are very likely pretty damn safe. If you are in sales ANYWHERE, then watch your back.

Sales is always the easiest to obliterate with all the metrics they have. Not meeting them regularly? Not making xyz amount of calls or meeting the minimum "talking hours/day?" Target on your back.

I've been with dell for 8 years and a few other fortune 500 companies in my career and, it's always sales who gets sla-ghtered in layoffs. You are supposed to be the money makers and if you aren't making money? Bye bye.

When someone posts leaked info about layoffs in FED, it means they have inside knowledge of what’s coming in the company.

Fed is not safe at all. This post is preposterous. Nowhere in Dell is safe. Fed laid off a bunch of folks this last round. More will happen as this AI tool push takes hold. Also, the AE mentioned below was still employed when that happened. It did not have anything to do with Dell, he just happened to work there.

My team in FED lost 30% headcount in March. Our boss isn't saying anything specific, but in every team meeting and 1x1 he urges us to seek training on a different product and recommends polishing our resumes. My guess is more layoffs are coming.

@a3 I'm guessing you know nothing about the FED department nor how it works. offshoring nor outsourcing is an option. Never has been and never will be.

Outsourcing would involve vetting - costly - along with sending them a dell federal computer - also costly.

It also involves someone outside of Dell knowing and having information that is only meant for the DFN. - Risky.

It just won't ever happen. I work in GRC - Government, risk management, and compliance.

I have to agree here. Worked on the corporate side for 5 or 6 years and ended up transferring to FED. It's a whole new world but it's small and you get to form relationships with a lot of people. Which is good and bad...

My main complaint is everything we use tool wise is usually outdated and not as "advanced" as what corporate uses due to "apparent" security things. idfk lol. But, I am much less stressed and it's overall a better environment for me.
