Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

So they're never going to restructure the teams post-layoffs?

Is that the plan? Workload's unmanageable. Half the tasks are things none of us know how to do. What am I supposed to do? Magically acquire a whole new skillset?

Little or no time for AI training... and it does seem they want all of us to embrace/use AI. Perhaps they are thinking they'll be able to use the AI agents we built to replace us. Nobody, afaik, who's still here has a wrote, cookie-cutter job. It's going to look like a cluster. Since DL is only here for 2 years, it will likely fail on the next CEO's watch.

I’ve been through enough of these to know this is how it always goes. If you’re “lucky” enough to not get RIF’d you end up paying for it big time.

Strange. I work frequently with one team that used to have 7 people. They gutted that team, kept the AD with 1 direct report. Now that team of two is completely drowning and everything is getting pushed off not because they don't want to help, but they don't have the capacity. Everyone thought that team would be absorbed into another but it didn't

Nope, they won't because it demands thinking beyond one liner prompt in Gemini

@d9 I don’t have time for them either, but Dear Leader thinks they are the most important thing, so I’m setting my actual work aside and letting it stack up in order to take pointless AI courses. If that’s VZ’s priority, then fine.

@d8 I don’t even have time to do those AI courses and don’t know how so many people were able to get through those trainings during normal work hours…. Must be real proud posting their certificates….

For those that ended up with literally no actual work post rifs, they are living the dream using all PTO and celebrating a few ai trainings as achievements. People that get work done are punished in Verizon with more work. People that do nothing get away with it easily in Lake Mary. Verizon doesn’t care about the workload imbalance at all and leaders won’t performance manage people out because they know they won’t get the backfills. And the lazy grifters will get the same stock together as everyone else once announced. Let’s go team!

For me it’s not even re-skill… I’m now doing the jobs of 3 people that got laid off and I’m not getting paid 3 times more

There’s no clear plan, someone needs to get a grip on day to day management and alignment between groups and Dan has not done that yet

@a4 Good, if I see another d-mb LinkedIn post, like Verizon took who was left in the Public Sector and sent them to Paris for the President's Club.

Reskill to what genius? Have you heard about Oracle layoffs and other companies with layoffs?

I know exactly what the op is really talking about. You train for years to build relevant skills in technology that is cutting edge but telecom has a lot of old technology that still has to be supported. On any executive call it’s made to sound like it’s the end of the line for these products but good luck getting larger customers off some of them anytime soon. Verizon goes ahead and lets go of everyone that still supported those products though so they wrap them up and bundle it all into other teams that serve newer products and everyone needs to know how to do hundreds of jobs all in one with a few hours of training done by the vteamers that are soon to be out of a job. Then try training a new hire a few years from now on how to do everything.

You’d have to completely reskill if you were laid off and floundering in the job market right now. The only difference being that you’re still getting paid. So do something about it now while you have an income, instead of waiting until you don’t, and be left to choose between that and taking a job that pays much less just to stop the bleeding.

I was just told by some former colleagues in the central/hq positions that there was a meeting today about more layoffs are definitively coming. I don't know how far that is supposed to reach, or if it's speculation from their management. But I don't think restructuring is going to be coming until Dan gets the free cash and Company size that he wants.
