Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Imperial Oil restructuring announcement : Calgary exit, Edmonton hub, JVs & logistics shift

XOM and Imperial Oil decide to divest Calgary-based non-core assets and restructure to stay competitive in a shifting regional and global energy market:

1- Calgary Quarry Park HQ: Sold to Brookfield, monetizing underutilized space. This mirrors Imperial’s real move to donate its former research centre and labs to SAIT, reinforcing a Calgary real estate pullback.

2- Corporate functions: Relocated to Edmonton, aligning headquarters with upstream operations.

3- Employee impact: Calgary staff offered relocation to operational or refinery sites, redeployment packages, or voluntary exits.

4- Cold Lake & Kearl: Continue to run as profitable oil sands assets, with upgrader units ensuring bitumen flows meet refinery specs. Over time, Imperial phases in project-level JVs with partners like Suncor and Cenovus on select expansions — sharing cost, technology, and risk without ceding full control.

5- Logistics & infrastructure (Midstream segment): Throughput and tariff agreements renegotiated with Enbridge and TC Energy, leveraging planned Mainline expansions and ~$2.5B Enbridge system upgrades. Rail partnerships with CN and CPKC improve flexibility to U.S. Gulf and Midwest markets.

6- Downstream operations:
Strathcona refinery (Edmonton) remains a central hub, now with renewable diesel capacity.
Sarnia refinery & chemical complex anchors the eastern market.
Nanticoke refinery complements Sarnia, strengthening Imperial’s Ontario downstream footprint.

Staff relocations tied into these downstream assets keep talent aligned with refining/chemical demand centers.

The Esso retail outlets were already sold in 2017. Selling off of JV core properties is likely next. Speculation of another pipeline is merely that speculation. The connection between heavy oil and larger carbon footprint is cause for more concern. StatsOil pulling out of Canada at a loss and now Exxon cutting back to very little beside refining is reason for concern for Canadian Oil and Gas.

#4 Is wrong, cold or kearl have no upgraders, just extraction.

@er the news says 2000 from Canada and the EU.... XOM is pretty lean in the EU, so it is reasonable to accept that most of these 2000 are coming from IOL and EM Canada

@ae Imperial is not a charitable organization, although, the ongoing promotion and career progress of some unemployable, no competency and poor capability leaders will defy that presumption.

@d6 from the corporate risk perspective, to its assets/information and also the performance and productivity they want from the employees to continue to deliver, the company will not let employees (who already know, most likely will not have a job) stay in their jobs until the last day of departure.... once a notice is given to you, they will cut you from the the network and your laptop will boot you out, so no more access to your data and files... they prefer to pay you for few more weeks wihout risking you damage the assets or take information with you... This is the reality of how they treat you once they decide you're worth nothing ( sorry, the proper language is " value to business")...

Just start to keep your desk clean, take your training materials, folders and email some project data and performance metrics you have so that you can build a proper resume for your next job...

If you have been with he company for more than 10 years, you really need to understand how the job market has changed ... it is really competitive... You need prepare new style of resume and try to market yourself (like a material good)..

@d6 in Quarry Park, 2 of 3 people will be laid off by January 2026. The remaining herds (about 200) will be moved to the operations sites or some office spaces in Edmotion. Although there has been no indication of such infrastructure and building spaces' existence so far ( so take that promise by the leadership with a grain of salt).
Just start applying for a new job today. There is going to be a big competition; everyone is applying for a few positions. It was hard to find a job before.... it is tough out there ...you need to get yourself (and your family) ready, both financially and mentally, for being without a job for 1-1.5 years

@bf so the total layoff will be very close to this number, instead of sugar coated 900. Just saying.

While not surprising, it is both economical and surgical move to Edmonton. Also, with technology advantages and AI advances, work can be carried out from either place, albeit Edmonton will be more cost effective. In addition reduced staff with ease or less pain. Over all win-win situation.
Eventually, IOL operations will diminish and with out sourcing, the company will change much more down the road.

They did a similar cruel layoff, replacing Calgary roles with India and Argentina jobs back in Nov. 2020... half of EMIT was wiped out at that time...and other departments were impacted too...
we should see this coming,..when they "donated" the labs to SAIT... the winter in coming (Game of Thrones)

@be about 1500 in QP.
According to 2024 annual report, Imperial Oil had 5,100 regular employees by the end of that year. Imperial's head office has been located in Calgary since 2004.

Relocation to Edmonton, like downtown Edmonton? I can't see how so many people will relocate to Strathcona Refinery, there is no space for all the upstream folks. Where is the new office?
