Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Inside / Outside Split. Is it all for show?

In FL, (IBEW) VZB techs are being split up between two different management chains. Inside and Outside. Management has spent the last 5 years trying to get us to perform ALL job tasks (without training or tools), and now they've done a complete 180. So far we have been divided up at random, and not given any information except for, "now you are an Inside tech" or "outside tech". In areas where there are only 1 or 2 techs covering a huge geographical area, how would that work? Tech's will have to turn away work because its not a responsibility of his manager? How does that better serve our customers? Who comes up with this cr-p? Who's going to work Fiber cuts if there are no Outside techs in the area? Who's going to work CCR builds if there's no Inside techs in that area? Throw it at the wall and see what sticks.

How does format work in other Union areas?

Rumor is the company will be declaring a surplus to IBEW in Jan. Not surprised.

They definitely introduced the VzT over complicated way to manage field ops into VzB. Totally backwards, considering that you have a new CEO stating that the way they do things are not effective & 'delightful' to the customer.
Also totally forgetting the VzB union and techs have totally different culture than T's, along with a different ntwrk & customer base. These aren't fios home subscribers, or a cell phone. His Corporate Enterprise peers & the gov't, will personally let him know when this change effects their network.

@er we end up fixing over 75% of the contractors splicing too. The last ISP package targeted specific offices which had senior level dead weight techs, all inside. Nothing came out in the south for outside guys from what I heard. Also IBEW was pi---d but didn’t fight targeted offices. Supposed to be “offered up” and taken on seniority but no one beside the 3 targets were offered. And I know for a fact it was specific offices as it was published in management level and shared with us that way. Offer was cr-p but that’s because we have a cr-p ISP clause in our contract.

@d9 agree it is for this but who is getting cut ? I can't figure out if you'll be safer inisde or outside. Can't imagine they want contractors going out to customer sites, but for things like splicing they have already been using tons of contractrs to supplement

@av south central PA, former Mid-Atlantic? We’ve had supervisors covering VZT/VZB IBEW/CWA under same supervisors for a long while. My boss was riff’d and he literally did the ordering and payroll/scheduling fixes for 3 other supervisors but had an enemy in the second or even 3rd level. Was definitely based on the good ‘ol boy club and not performance. Guy worked for the company since high school for 22 years. Now we have a boss literally a state away covering half of western PA! Poor guy is barely treading water. Also they’ve considered VZB excess headcount for years.

from what I hear, it is a prep to us more contractors. About half of supervisors got axed and all techs are not reporting to the remaining supervisors and techs are now divided. There is no way one supervisor can handle 20-30 techs now under them. it's not about using tech efficiently but not to use the techs...you can guess what's coming next.

just be ready for more changes

@ad my boss also got axed. Really su-ks because she was one of the best managers I've ever worked for and was really good at her job. The RIF had nothing to do with performance. The good ol' boys network is still around.

They seperated similarly in PA ( CWA ) and you are right this is counter to basically everything that has happened the past 8-10 years. Odd indeed. Also odd is that they now have some VZB techs reporting to VZT supervisors. Never ever happened before here

Union techs working projects?..🤣🤣🤣 no wonder we are in such trouble everwhere....I feel sorry for the PM behind it...it takes probably a year for Union folks to work on builds...
