Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

We Are Not Disposable

How do you say goodbye to something that’s been your life for years? How do you walk away from a place that’s taken so much of you—and given so little in return? I’m not just talking about a job. I’m talking about the pieces of myself I’ve sacrificed—my time, my energy, my health, and so many of the moments I’ll never get back. I gave everything for this company, and now they want to throw me away like it never mattered.

I’ve watched my colleagues, my friends, pour their hearts into this place. We’ve all stayed late. We’ve all skipped meals. We’ve all fought to keep this company afloat. And now, we’re being told that we’re not valuable anymore? That we’re just numbers? We deserve so much more than that.

You don’t get to take someone’s life and effort and call it ‘business as usual.’ You don’t get to break us like this and pretend it doesn’t hurt. Because it does. It hurts more than I can put into words.

But what hurts more than anything? Watching others stay silent, afraid to speak up. Afraid that their voices won’t matter. But they do. Our voices do matter. We are not just another set of employees to be replaced. We are human beings, and we will not be erased.

I will not sit back and let this happen to us. Not without fighting for every person who has given their all to make this company what it is. This is not just a job. This is our lives. And we deserve better than being cast aside like we’re nothing."

Disposable? Not quite yet, I like to think that I still got a couple of decades more to go. But I'm sure dispensable from the company's POV.

If you weren't around from the last transformation in 2020 then you were duped. If you went through the job selection in 2020 then you're stupid.

Your employer sees you as disposable and you should see your employer as disposable as well. This is corporate America you work for... or corporate India?

If you sacrificed your health, that's on you. Why anyone would do something so stupid perplexes me.

At the end of the day you need to know who is it you really work for - it’s not CVX. You work for yourself, your family, and your retirement. Those things can, or used to be, able to be accomplished at CVX- but that was never guaranteed. Keeping, and upgrading, transferable skills and properly managing your finances are key in the long run.

We are all disposable and the job can end tomorrow. At the end this is all a business transaction not a marriage. Company doesn't owe you anything except a paycheck. The sooner you realize it the better you will be able to cope with your situation.

We all have to realize that there hasn't been any company loyalty to the employees since the 80's. The hard reality is that the company (virtually all companies) see you as a commodity, one which can be used or discarded of at any whim. You have to realize that you are a mercenary to the company you work for, they only thing the company gives you back is experience to put on your résumé. You have to develop the mindset that you work for yourself, not for Chevron. Whatever you are doing for Chevron, make sure it is transferrable to your résumé, and easily recognizable on the outside as something of value. As an old-timer once told me, 'dollars and barrels, that's all that matters'.

A lot of people are calling posts like this fake, but the sentiment is real and I am sure that someone reading can relate. So this is for anyone reading this post that feels some of this.

You are NOT your job. You are so much more than that. Do not let a job define you. Let your virtues and your relationships define you. Unless you are creating the next great invention or company, people will not remember what you did for Chevron (or any company), but they will remember how you made them feel. You are loved and you have way more to offer than your job at Chevron.

Your enemy is not the person working in the cubicle or office next to you, it is the greedy people at the top that got massive raises while we've gotten scraps. It's the people that have been in leadership for ten years but now tell us that we have to change the culture that THEY put in place.

Hang in there, y'all.

This is fake. You weren’t let go yet. They wouldn’t expose themselves to the legal risks. There’s still a PDC event. They haven’t made the selections yet. Get off our board, go back to your own. You’re spreading hate and panic

goodness gracious don't be so dramatic...of course you are disposable and if you imagined yourself something other than that...well...whose fault is that. Wash away the sn-t and keep moving.

Yeah, when you delude yourself to believe you've owned your own production, you'll need to get a little disgruntled.
You are and have been a production tool.
That realization will be liberating.

Hey OP

I find your post highly relatable. I have felt what you describe. The only difference is that I moved into the “fu-k this place & fu-k MW & the whole ELT” stage, and it is sooooo much better for my well-being. I hope that you can get through the stage of feeling hurt and get to the other side.

It’s clear from your post that you are a caring, hard-working employee, and I am really sorry about how you have been treated.

Some people lack the decency to treat good employees like you with the care and respect that they should. Eventually this sh-t show will all come apart, but those senior leaders will be long gone by then, taking their millions with them.

I wish I could tell you that they will recognize the error of their ways and hang their heads in shame for what they have done to our company, but I think we all know that is about as likely to happen as Texas respecting women’s rights.

Take care of yourself and remember that even if you now feel betrayed or maybe even foolish for having given your all, nobody can take away your self-respect and your ethics, which is something these self-serving parasites know nothing about.
