Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Should be 50k pluss

After 20+ years at Oracle, no one is exempt from cuts. Realistically, they’re doing many a favor. The company is bloated at 160K employees—I’ve long said it could shed 50K with zero impact. Next should be VPs, directors, accountants, and especially lawyers. I applaud the move, but it could have gone much deeper.

@a1 a company's goal isn't to pay for child care or insurance... it is to make money. The government is the one that needs to facilitate a healthy economy.

Everyone needs money. Doesn't mean that they're justified to gum up a company by sitting in there doing nothing and collecting a paycheck. They can earn it by doing something real like farming/plumbing/building/military etc.

Let me make sure I understand your point. Are you saying the company was responsible for helping you secure another role before your position was eliminated? And when you were originally hired, was that through the company’s direct effort, or based on your own qualifications and initiative?

It’s also worth asking—did you genuinely not see this coming, or were there signs that were overlooked? Companies aren’t obligated to provide severance, even though many choose to do so. As for covering additional costs or benefits after the fact, that responsibility typically falls on the individual, not the employer.

More broadly, part of the challenge within the employee community is a tendency to overlook personal accountability in situations where a bit of practical judgment could go a long way.

@aj So, as you said, "Many of the lazy/je-k/su-k ups are still there." Why do so many terminated complain then about the fact of the layoffs per se? Layoffs had to be done; if Oracle's job and environment had been so disliked as it sounds in someones' words today, they should have left on their own before the layoffs and watch these things from greener pastures.

The selection of people for being laid off is a different story. Would I say that I was terminated fairly? Who cares what I think about it? Oracle didn't commit a sin by letting me go: it is the organization's privilege and not my call.

@a5 that would be fine if the lazy ones/je-ks/su-k ups were the ones laid off, but that is often not the case. Lots of hard working, committed people with institutional knowledge lost their jobs today. Many of the lazy/je-k/su-k ups are still there.

They need to reorganize and evaluate. More rounds will happen.

@a2 I was in the same shoes as you.It is my opinion and I stand by it. Where does say you employed for life. Only a fool believes this. It’s not my fault you didn’t see this coming. JMO

@a2 Just being realistic. When you took the job did you expect to be employed for life?

@OP Having been on multiple teams during my many years of Oracle service, I am fully supporting your point of view. Oracle had been full with buzy bees, people who stall others' work, producing nothing of value themselves. The layoffs have had to happen in order for the company to stay afloat.

@a1 As a former Oracle employee (laid off last August), and a current Oracle shareholder, I would vote my shares against turning Oracle into a charity. Your and my bills are our problems, not Oracle's. Your and my empoyments were employments "at will". Life is cruel, Oracle is practical and not unfair.

What kind of sadist are you? Some us will be fine. Many will struggle to find new roles in the current job market. Think before you opine.

@OP Let us know your opinion when you don't have an income coming in and 4 mouths to feed, mortgage, medical bills, cell phone bills, internet, heating, water, car insurance, car payments, house insurance, tuition, clothing, food, elders to care for, child care, etc. Even one person getting laid off without securing another job is too much.
