Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

What are the best alternatives?

Where is everyone applying? I know most people are already looking, since no one’s crazy enough to just wait and see if their number comes up, but the listings I see are honestly discouraging. There are so few openings compared to how many of us will soon be out there searching. Are people branching into other industries too? Is there anywhere that’s actually hiring where our skills translate well?

@de I am currently working in the Middle East and it is not a good backup plan. This place is crawling with Indians as well. Work culture is terrible. Pay is low. I am an expat and company keeps cutting package. If you come here as a direct hire or contractor to one of the companies here the pay is very low.

I’m contemplating moving to the Middle East (Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman). Does anyone have contacts with someone who has done this? Not looking for a job referral, just want to understand the process they went through and whether they went there first to look for a job or stayed in Canada while searching.

I can share a burner email address to start the connection. Much appreciated.

Folks, I'm so sorry about this hit. Wishing you the best and happy to help. If you're looking for your next job in anything tangentially energy industry-related (energy in general) and are ready to move anywhere in Canada, Europe or Mideast, just email me at and I'll do a free resume review, free interview prep, and help you line up interviews for matching positions. Bonus points if you have 10-20+ years of experience... land, technical, procurement, internal audit, etc. don't panic because you're 45 years old. All the best!

I think one of the challenges is that employers in other industries are well aware that salaries in the oil and gas sector are very high. If they can’t offer a comparable salary, it’s hard for them to motivate you to create value for them. In that case, they might as well hire someone from their own industry or even a new grad. That’s why when looking for jobs in different industries, it’s usually best to go through personal connections.

Well the good news is: there’s been a lot of ppl fired from Imperial during my tenure and there are quite a few that landed nicely on their feet post IOL. Some had to relocate but such is life. You gotta go where the work is, I don’t think a lot of ppl nowadays accept that. Just remember, there IS life after Imperial. Good luck to all

My computer wh-z spouse ran my resume through ChatGPT and asked it to suggest edits that would help my resume get picked out by AI resume screener tools used by recruiters. It gave helpful suggestions for the type of keywords to include, don’t use abbreviations (example say “standards” instead of std. because AI doesn’t do well with abbreviations….
Highly recommend this exercise as it opened my eyes. A lot of initial recruitment and screening is done by AI now.

Most jobs are off market meaning they don’t appear on any job board.

You have to network, network, network.

O&G as a source of employment is dying. Take your skills to other industries.

Beside what you would see as your skills, in this company you do learn a lot of professional behaviors that will make you valuable.
Now, it is hard to show that in a resume, especially when an AI is reviewing the 100s of resumes submitted to every job.

Depending on personal severance situation, it might be ideal to find a job ASAP, but worst case scenario severance should buy you some time and the outplacement services should help.

I have friend who was let go a few years back, couldn't find any job, finally reached out to outplacement folks who helped revamp their LinkedIn, and then all of a sudden got multiple offers from recruiters.
