Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Well I said I would never come back but did. Big mistake.

I retired from exxon making 220k at 55. I could not stand it anymore. I said I would never work for this dysfunctional s heet show again. Well they offered me a contractor position through an agency. My pay was only half at 120k per year. They told me I would not have to deal with all the BS forms, moc, procurement, and training cr-p. I got put under a young female supervisor and she immediately started lecturing me about performance and expectations. I was simply there to help with engineering designs and reviews. This supervisor knew nothing of engineering and only knew exxon bruacracy. I was asked to perform some saftey tasks and lab inspections. I told my overlord it was not part of my duties and I was to do engineering work. She told me I was being insubordinate and she would delegate my tasks. It was all downhill from there. Since I was familiar with gmocs I was instructed to initiate several because the new engineers did know how to complete them. The supervisor was getting very angry at me complaining that I was taking too long on tasks. I quit 3 months into my failed return to exxon. The supervisor was pi---d and told me that I would never work at exxon again and I was on the black list for hiring. I told her to stick the job up her ar-e and I never wanted to work at exxon in my life. The contract company was pi---d as well and told me I could not work for them again. I do not want to work anymore. My treatment was the worst by this individual. I wanted to punch the s heet out of her. The power went to her head and she treated me like a child. I knew it was a mistake but I was bored and thought I could do work that I liked. This is just my story and hope it helps others not make the same mistake. I might just volunteer some where to stay busy.

There something about the young ones at ExxonMobil. They may be smart kids out of college and but some of them are arrogant. They rotate them too fast to give them the impression that they can make it to executive level. Many developed no skills other than order people around, take credit for other people’s work, and pretend they know something.

@q0 Another one of these “I have plenty of money but I love work” posts.

This is either BS or the symptom of some kind of mental disorder. I’m leaning towards BS because you came here to complain in the first place.

I too can relate to this story. I was piptired at 55 by a ruthless supervisor. Everything I did was scrutinized. I believe they put under this particular supervisor to get rid of me. The supervisor was a hatchet man. Exxon has changed for the worst. I left in 2021and did not regret it. I would never want to work at exxon again. My pip pil states I cannot anyway. I worked for a few more years at another company and retired last year. The last few years at exxon were unbearable. I do feel sorry for the current employees as they will never know how good it was before.

I have plenty of money but I just wanted to do the things I was good at. I could work at Kellogg or FD if I want to. I think my working days are behind me. I have now joined the retirement club and eat with my old friends. When you reach my age you do not have to put up with exxon lunacy. I have no patience for young people who think the are gods gift to the world.

@hx It’s okay to say “everything is more expensive and I needed the money.”

@OP So basically you tried retirement, realized that you had no life or identity outside of your job (and that you’d outlive your savings), so you came back to the workforce for half the money and now you’re whining about it to the internet. Got it.

This is literally the most boomer thing ever.

I retired from EM filled with so many other interests, I never considered returning.

I would say, if you don’t need the money then get a life.

Yes it was at one of the B sites and it stinks like the town it is in. My old retired friends warned me that once you stop working and putting up with lunacy you cannot and won't tolerate it anymore. I do not wish to work anymore. I will just travel and play with my toys. Please excuse my rambling writing as I was never any good at writing just engineering and design. It was not just my supervisor that was mad with power all of the others at B town were just as bad. When I said the young engineers could not do gmocs I meant they did not want to do them. They passed their work onto me as I was contract. I basically did the work no one else wanted ie the s heet jobs.

I was being forced out yes. My time was coming soon. It is not that I dont want to work. I just want to work at a decent place without so many egos and rules. Let me do the work I am good at which is engineering and design. Right now I am working on my retirement.

Seems like she is high potential and will get VP by 35 years old.

Anything is possible at this place. The gaps in accountability is staggering. No way I would come back as a contractor or even a manager. The rot is deep.

you know you don't have to share all your failings with the entire internet. In all that rambling the truth shone through:

"I do not want to work anymore"

Hmmm. They're not supposed to set expectations and talk about performance since that goes into co-employment territory.

I don’t know of any young engineers that can’t do GMOCs, they’re pretty straightforward and the newbies are tech savvy. At most sites that’s like half their job. We get co-op students to do GMOCs.

As a contractor I was disposable and could have been fired at anytime. She actually told me dont make me have to fire you. I could see the delight in her eyes wielding power over me and others. As far as she getting fired or moved she was in good with the managers. I was doomed and knew it. The level of dysfunction has gotten out of hand at exxon. I dont know how employees stay for this kind of treatment. Fear only works for so long once you have an out use it.

I would have stayed until they fired me, or her.
