Thieves. Don't get back what I paid for bought PTO and they're continuing to charge me despite my job elimination. I Busted my ru-p in this dead-end place forever and this is just icing on the cake.

I feel you. It’s not a small amount/ it’s basically $112 a month for 4 months for me, money I will never get back. I know they changed the PTO policy effective 1/1 (how convenient!) so we now lose all PTO but I was not thinking it would apply to Bought PTO. I buy days every year for my daughter’s medical appointments, and I think it’s absolutely atrocious they will not stop taking the amount out of my checks. I am not asking for my PTO time, I’m simply asking to stop paying for PTO time I will never get to use. It’s cruel.
Cigna will not pay out any unused hours but will claw back any overused hours.
Seems like a fair policy for both sides.
people - revoke your arbitration agreement and start a class action.
Keeping your BTO is very unjust. That is very disappointing and leave me a bad taste.
It can make sense if you already over-used your earned PTOs, then company can deduct back.
@bt really? only band 4 and below don’t get paid for earned but unused PTO? If band 5 and above get paid, that is definitely a discrimination
@cv Keeping BTO is extra slimey too because Open Enrollment ended not too long before the 1/29 layoffs.
I generally avoid lawyers, considering their cost can often outweigh the benefit, but keeping the BTO money is just so wrong, I think I would at least consult with one out of principle if I were in this situation. I have always been very skeptical of BTO and the potential to lose money, so I have not personally participated in that program.
My attorney advised keeping our own BTO contributions is 100% illegal and not to worry about, get an attorney
@ca Same here. Shocking at how boldly and confidently they give the wrong answers.
@c7 The Indian Employee Service Center representatives told me incorrect information that I had to get corrected by actual American HR through a support ticket from the representatives to HR.
Should be a lesson to everyone that you should NEVER buy PTO.
@OP if you are contacting an HR rep about this and they are in India, make sure you get an American instead. The ones in India may give wrong advice since they know nothing about US laws and they will just side with the employer without critically thinking.
@c4 ok cool looks like they have to by law in my state and I dont really have to negotiate
Considering BTO is only utilized after you use all your PTO I would think this would be fairly close to a “wash” this time of the year. And it’s going to depend on which state you reside in. Most states don’t have a law requiring the pay out for in-used PTO. Doesn’t make it any better though.
@bt, they did announce last year that they will not longer pay out PTO, however, I didn't realize different rules apply for different bands. They are aware which states like California where they still have to payout the PTO and will continue to do so in states where they must, so if it's not illegal in your state, they don't have to payout the PTO. However, this thing with continued payments for BTO that you can never use is insane. I don't get how that's legal anywhere.
@OP hope you get it back, if not at least you see the real face of the company now vs 5 or more yrs from now.
yes. i am also upset and seeking legal action about the same pto wage theft taking place at Cigna.
do you realize Cigna changed the unused / purchased policy in 2025 to where employees now forfeit pto when terminated? only for band 4 and lower bands though - sounds illegal and like a class action waiting to happen
How many PTO days did you buy and lose? I think severance was 5 months salary from what I've heard
I would consult with an attorney, that sounds very illegal
depending on your state they may be required to pay out your PTO. I was thinking of doing this myself to negotiate but my severance was relatively generous so I am not.
