Theres a ton of union titles that still exist. In past company has just surplussed those titles to bare minimums. Example coin collectors, storekeepers. Besides outside linemen do we really need inside techs? Central Office techs literally change cards and replace fibers. The trouble shooting is done by management and when a device needs replacement a CO tech does the physical work that takes 5 minutes.

@OP SAD
We (should) have a WATERMARK of the minimum allowable number of headcount in each title. AT&T does in some contracts, like Legacy T for Network Technical Specialists.
Pretty sure that there is still one coin guy left .I think they also have one guy left that used a compass for locating where poles were to be placed or something like that not really sure exactly but something no joke like
Nothing gets eliminated without agreement. If a title is phased out it has always included green circling any pertinent employees to a relevant alternate title. The implementation of the contract layoff language including the IPP and EIPP clauses are triggered usually resulting in no one left in the affected titles. The result being a title eliminated with no active employees holding such a title. In the odd case when there is still a senior employee they are layoff proof anyway, so the company waits until the age out voluntarily. There is nothing new about this. The roots of the contract date to the 1960s.
Currently if there is a failure in WI....an IL or MN tech!
Flaggers are safe. They are part of the Verizon special needs program.
COT here. While there is less work than there was in the old days, we are still responsible for maintaining important equipment and circuits. Who would respond to an equipment failure if there aren’t any COTs?
@OP obviously you never worked a day of your life in the Central Office.
@OP all positions are in the fray. The higher paid are primarily targeted.
