Thread regarding Optum layoffs

New RIF date is 1/23

I just saw on another thread that the RIF for 1/22 was moved to 1/23?? Is that correct and what’s with the change?

@197 With more and more of our management being offshored, it makes sense they'd forget the 19th was a US holiday, because it's not one of the days THEY celebrate {insert random regional Indian holiday here}.

@w0 not even close! Performance has 0 to do with this. Look at the org chart in tech, it’s almost 100% from India (either offshore or here on visa).

And let’s see - if they are offshoring all their tech then guess what onshore tech that’s not from India gets cut.

How were they not aware 1/19 was a holiday? That does not pass the common sense test

@vx yea it is. 25% of the entire company. STARTING with performance. You would be surprised at how many people work for UHG but merely shuffle work to other people. It probably 1/2 if the company if not more…

@vf If the target of 25% was picked in advance, then it's not really about objective individual performance then is it? It's about back-filling reasons for a massive cut.

The strategy being deployed for 2026 is 'shrink to grow', the goal isn't to drive up absolute dollars in 'profits', but to improve margins - ie overhead relative to income. And 2025 being the year it was, being able to cut headcount and getting a bump in YOY margins is going to be possible.

It’s 25% of ALL of UHG-Optum being the first round on 1/23/26(friday) due to the extended long weekend. Comp planner opens Tuesday but those impacted will still be on the comp planner so their director will not know until Wednesday or Thursday when HR starts doing the meetings with the directors who have to let staff go. If a director is one of the individuals, they will not know until Friday the 23rd. They will not be included in the meeting on Wednesday and Thursday with HR. The individuals were not chosen by their directors – they were chosen by HR through the merit scoring that had to be turned in early this year. So it will be the under performers – those who scored a two and a low three – it will not be affecting hyper performers this year. It has nothing to do with offshore so stop spreading that rumor. It has nothing to do with automation so stop spreading that rumor. It has nothing to do with meeting stakeholders dollars – it has nothing to do with lining the pockets of people higher up. It has everything to do with the fact that UHG list 1million medicare members and due to the federal budget cuts. This is not going to be a popular statement, but if you were under performing in any other company, you would not get to keep your job.

@gz i would guess this will be across the board, no specific area targeted.

If rumors are true, and they did move to Friday, this is gonna be a big one. Good luck all, and if your name is on the list, consider yourself one of the fortunate ones.

@fk only true in a real free market. This isn’t a free market. Companies are getting money from the government and benefit from the offshore stealth tax and so much more. HOWEVER, this HAS changed. The US is in fiscal dominance. The game has changed and the US will begin to function, in some ways, like China. It has no choice. This IS NOT politics, its the law of money/trade.

Grab some popcorn and watch the show!

It’s probably not moved but they might as well do it on a Friday.

@eq a company's loyalty is to its shareholders. You are an employee at well. Companies have never been loyal to the worker. Once you get that you'll be happier

This company has the least amount amount of job security of any that I have worked at. Doesn't matter if you are a good, valued employee working with them for 15+ years - no security at all - loyalty means nothing to this company.

@e7 comp planner is where managers enter salary increases and bonus information. “Compensation planner” is what it references. Impacted employees are NOT being removed from comp planner when it opens. Managers will NOT find out their direct reports are impacted by looking here.

@e6

What is the 'comp planner' ?

Date moved to 23rd. All impacted employees remain in comp planner. I have impacted people in my hierarchy. Their managers do not know and there is no set date to inform them.

@af actually there was a recent one that fell on a Tuesday

@OP It could be any day next week I think. They seem to be changing around the exact day to throw everyone off.

@af wouldn't that lend credence to the date being shifted to the 23rd since managers wouldn't find out until the 20th?

It is always a Thursday. That is the 22nd. The people saying managers find out the 19th must not be talking HQ, as HQ is closed as a company holiday that day.
