Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Enjoy your new safety standard

The veep of corporate environment and his analyst are certified donkeys. Operations and maintenance now have one standard for safety while lab personnel have another. The double standard is bad enough but the actual standard is stupid as well. This will not improve safety and will only deter anyone from wanting to do more for safety. Mark my words, off shift, places that are rarely visited, they will follow this as much as people follow the no looking at your phone rule or the use hand rails rule. They should be fired immediately but they won't. Bilbo will probably give them all promotions saying they saved everyone. Stupid people making stupid rules.

No one is certified at that level but the majority are most certainly certifiable.

Another d-mb initiative is they want to cut 50% exposure for employees due to hearing conservation. How stupid is that goal ? There are big machines and motors for the large coater lines. Are the Management prepared to spend any money? Pure stup1dity.

@d0 The VP of EHS doesn’t have to wear an uncomfortable bump hat for 8/12hr but expects plant production/maintenance staff to but as per usual nobody challenges them on the stupidity of it they just nod their heads the puppets
Common sense would be for them to be used for specific tasks and risk assess each task to see if a bump hat is needed it’s like putting a bandage on in case you cut yourself

I work in a factory and have a Prince Albert piercing that extends more than 1 cm away from my body, but only during certain times of the day. Can I make adjustments throughout the day (to shift the barbell piercing a little) to be in compliance with the standard? Who has responsibility for Prince Albert inspections?

@OP From my understanding this came directly from the VP of EHS. The people on the actual instruction are just patsies.

@ab for us its the lack of awareness from corporate on this. Bump caps help in some situations but not all. Saying everyone needs to wear a bump cap is a little ridiculous. We are a science based company. Show us the data that shows the huge amount of head injuries in production areas, maintenance areas, and pilot plants. I dont go to many lab areas but it seems like there is a double standard for them as they dont have to wear the same PPE as everyone else does.

Its also the lack of specifics. When I go into a lab area, can I take my bump cap off and wear a hoodie because I am magically in a safe space again? There are so many issues with this policy it should not have been put out. It sounds like it came directly from the mouth of the VP with no one else looking at it.... and if they did, they figured out the VP was going to railroad this through anyway so they said nothing.

Is the bump cap the main issue people are complaining about in the plants?

@a8 no one has said they plants have a premium safety standard. Dont be an id--t. All that is being said is that the labs should be held to the same standard as everyone else. There is nothing special about a lab we---e.

@a8 you are... Something else.... You seem to be missing the point that they should be treated the same yet they aren't.

@a6 And I bet production and maintenance are more than 0% as well.

Sounds like you should quit your whining, join the corporate EHS team and start holding all these slacking Labs to the same premium safety standards that the plants and maintenance adhere to. Because, you know, that are at 0% right?

@a4 have you ever been in a lab? Safety is just a suggestion to them.

@a4 and production lines and maintenance shops are different how? They each have their own equipment and are guarded better than any lab area. I'd like to see how many injuries are lab personnel vs operations and maintenance. I bet lab personnel are more than 0% so they should have the same standard.

Labs require the necessary PPE per what functions and experiments are being performed there. Any equipment like drill presses, saws, need guarding in place. Safety glasses, hearing protection if necessary and other PPE required if you deal with chemicals. So not sure how there is a double standard. Each lab might have different requirements.

@a1 labs don't have to follow the same standard as operations and maintenance. You can literally have a lab have the same equipment as a maintenance shop but not require the same PPE.
