Does anyone who has been promoted to the Staff level in Engineering have any tips on how to get that promotion?

@b5w u know from experience how well that works?
Get under the desk or be-doverClearly you don't have what it takes to get a promotion the normal way
Having dismal YoY earnings and cratering the stock 25% is no reason to for a promotion or raise for anyone in leadership. But watch , if the leaders are making up the rules, that will do it and no one will know until publishing of the annual report later in the year. Any bets?
@89r respect
@89k haha ok that was decently played I can’t hate
@88w I guess that would make you Fagel. Chicka chicka yeah!
@84z sick burn mclovin
@7yt Here's a rattle to play with. Adults are talking.
@7rh what happened, you ran out of corporate buzz words and phrases? Why don’t you put a pin in it and circle back on Monday?
@7ha 100% It's the "I've been here for 3 months, I should get a promotion. And another one in 6 months. I should be Staff in about 3 years."
@7fe to be fair it’s a common unwritten expectation with the youngins.
@6hj who are you referring to? I didn't hear anyone say anything like any of that.
Just because you sit in the same job for a few years and do the minimum requirements doesn't qualify you for a promotion every certain time period. Entitled prat.
@6dh
Marketing and other groups are smart enough to do promotions mid year. This way they can decouple from the we had a bad year stuff.
Also, other teams fight to promote and increase pay. Engineering is the opposite. They pride themselves on how cheap they can be and how low they can keep the salaries. Completely different mindset.
almost everytime I hear that there's a hiring or promotion freeze, you can guarantee that next week a boatload of Marketing and Senior Management folks are "joining each other to welcome a new hire or celebrating someone's promotion".
@6bd
Half the promotions are meaningless and are just slight bumps in salary. They have created many lower levels and mid steps that didn't used to exist. All that matters are letter grade promotions which change bonus target and rarely happen. In US engineering there are basically 3 letter grades with a 4th (H grade) principal that is impossible to achieve. H grade is equivalent to Sr. Mgr. The grades are consistent across disciplines... So titles are meaningless. Unfortunately, they don't teach the new hires about this so that they can push meaningless title promotions.
In this case staff level is a letter grade promotion which is very difficult to get.
Don't fool yourself. Those 3 promotions were likely only one real letter grade promotion.
Promotions do happen. Apparently, someone in engineering was promoted three times in four years. Albeit at lower than Staff level, they might make Staff position in 2-4 years going that rate.

All pure talent and geniuses
Mattel is a classic example of a “fail to the top” organization. If you’re inside the walls of the HTC, Tower or Maple buildings, just look at what is around you.
Here’s the tip. Don’t. The company will take everything from you before it gives you anything. Promotions are supposed to achievements. Here, they’re sentences. If you strive for promotion, take it for the title and then leave. You’re welcome!
@5qr what do you call someone who gets dumped but keeps going to their ex's Facebook page everyday posting anonymously how much they're glad they broke up?
What does that tell you about someone if they're dumped and yet they still try to get back with their ex. LOL. That's called a loser. If you get out, consider yourself lucky.
I have nothing but revulsion for this place and its people.
@590 The same reason they didn't leave until they were forced to.
If anyone left why in the heck would they ever want to come back to this place? It's the most inefficient fakest slowest moving company I've ever seen. Aside from working at Disney. They're full of $h!t too.
Clearly?
Clearly they laid you off and not me.
Maybe?
Maybe asking for tips isn't complaining or demonstrating lack of direction or worthiness.
Best way is to leave Mattel, come back at a higher salary in a new position. Multiple people at high levels have done this!!!
@OP
Clearly they don't like you or your performance. If they did you would be provided clear direction on path forward.
Maybe you haven't demonstrated ability or composure worthy of staff level.
@OP
Leave
Company is unstable and clearly doesn't value you. Go somewhere they value you
@1np elaborate.
Before you leave delete all your files .:.
@1nq, its brilliant ideas like yours that exemplify today’s illogical mindsets. It’s no doubt you want an even bigger target on your back…go for it! your lazy ignorance is d-mbfounding.
for everyone here in the replies; best bet is to do bare minimum required for your job title- no less, no more. If sh-t continues to hit the fan and spew sh-t on you and your well-being & plan for the furture, then you continue to do less and less. collectively, this is the only way to enact change. Let the ship SINK. If we can achieve this collectively, we'll all be better off in the future.
@dj you need to micro-CHECK them right back. come with receipts.
OK I'll put in my 2-week tomorrow.
@js Good comeback.
@j3
Bend over and su-k up to a VP. Get them to like you and you'll get promoted. No amount of hard work will get you promoted to staff or management. You need to have a VP sponsor that brings you along. That's how Mattel works.
@j1
Must have hit close to home. Got you so riled up.
@j3
Move to a different department. Quality, marketing, anything other than product development.
Or.... Go to a different company.
