Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I’m already panicking a bit

I got cut in this round. My wife could easily lose her job in the coming months too, as her company is heading into a major round of layoffs. I keep hearing and reading stories about people who haven’t been able to find another job for months, even a year. I’ve been looking into other options for a while now, and it’s been a deeply discouraging experience. I know panicking doesn’t help, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that the walls are closing in.

to Alabama and getting out of the high-cost high wage rat race if you can swing it is one of the best self-preservation decisions an adult can make. 90 min to Atlanta, 60 minutes to Birmingham Galleria, 1:45 mins to Tuscaloosa surrounded by the speedway, pro and college sports, jobs, and shopping.

Went through this a couple of times and luckily was able to find jobs within the company. Was a wake up call on my personal finances. Cut back on a lot of unnecessary expenses and threw more into savings, though my significant other was unhappy for awhile. Was able to retire recently and can pay my bills, have a rainy day fund and live within my means. Kinda miss the new cars every 3-4 years, going out when and where I wanted but after seeing how some of my peers have been impacted it’s not bad, Some indeed did land on their feet but some didn’t. My advice would be to plan as if it might take longer to find a job. If you do you are that much further ahead. If you have to take something that is not as good you are still further ahead.

if this is you first time, you will go through a lot of emptions..betral, depression etc..

What happened is not your fault and consider it awakening from your comfort zone.

During telecom collapse, I closed the door of the company I worked for. When I went to work for fMCI, layoff was like every 2 weeks. then every month, then every quarter then every year.

All of coworkers from the lay off either came back or found better jobs elsewhere. None has had miserable life at all. You will find something better than what you had. It just may take some time..believe in yourself.

Good luck to you.

@OP - I’m already panicking a bit""

Sorry to hear you were impacted by Verizon's downsizing but you're just getting out of the gate so don't give up hope. Here's something I found on this site that really helped me.

Much success in your search!

@a3 people are downvoting this guy but it’s TRUE. The attitude of not wanting to take a job that’s “beneath you” will put you on the STREETS. Take what you can get and remember everything is temporary.

cut costs, cook more. You have basically a year between all the benefits and unemployment.

Take a deep breath. Your mind is jumping to worst case scenarios, and it’s too early to go there. You don’t know if your spouse is going to get laid off, and with any luck, your land and new gig sooner rather than later.

I suggest you focus on what you can control:

  • File for unemployment benefits as soon as you receive your severance check. This will provide some cushion as you search for a new job.

  • Get your personal finances in order and set a budget. Cut back on unnecessary expenses.

  • Focus on your job search. You can use AI to help customize your resume for open rules. LHH also has a résumé writing service that can make your CV ATS compliant so recruiters are more likely to contact you. Jazz up your LinkedIn profile and lean on your network/contacts to serve as referrals.

  • Very importantly … Take care of your mental health and overall well-being. Go outside and take a walk, write in a journal, meditate or pray … Do whatever you can to calm your mind and keep the anxiety at bay. Eat nutritious food and get good sleep.

Think positive. You got this!
