I left in January because the environment had become way too toxic, and now a new offer just landed in my inbox. The offer itself looks solid, but I am really unsure about stepping back into a place that pushed me out in the first place. I am hoping someone who stayed can give an honest read on whether things are actually better or if it is still the same mess I walked away from.

I worked for one of the best managers ever, who was demoted and forced out by some of the new ex Msft rejects. My new manager is an absolute dum--ss. So you can start with a great leader/team but things can change fast.
However if you are an a--hole, NetApp is your place.
Nothing has changed in the last year for the most part. You don't mention which team you are considering, or were on previously. It would depend on that (if it is an always-tumultuous team, think twice) as well as why you were pushed out in the first place.
@OP Veteran here since 1999 , from one of the best companies in the Valley , to a ruthless gang of incompetent useless bunch of clueless leadership team. Lost their way , by trying to be a cloud provider when they never were , bandoning 6-7 products (VTL , hci , clupio , all of the cloud cr-p etc etc ) . Mixed signals to customers , confusing to partners , opportunistic deals with once off partners just to get a deal , the company is now slowly becoming irrelevant to the Pure's , Nutanixe's , Vast's and WEKA's of this world , and as soon as they reach a 50% of upgrading the installed base from spinning to flash , they downfall will commence if it has not done allready
Only come back if you need the money.
Still lots of internal churn and some basic core functions remain understaffed. The paychecks clear so that’s a plus.
It's still a raging dumpster fire
Same mess. Recently went through another round of silent layoffs. The new head of product has announced his big org changes, that’s bound to shake things up too. Overall it’s hectic and still not going anywhere good. In terms of the offer, take it if the salary is good and you don’t have other options but stay looking.
