@av The entire reason for RTO has nothing to do with productivity. There were people who were never in an office doing remote work that was impactful and efficient. So, if people here really believe the RTO is a punishment for people who goofed off on the clock, then you’ve never worked in an office bc more bullsh-t is shoveled there in pretending to work than I’ve ever experienced. Anyone that thinks you aren’t a wave away from another surplus/RIF at AT&T is either high or downright delusional. Relocating only to be RIF-ed is absurd.

If you are a high performer that truly benefitted the company while WFH. Come to grips with the fact that your coworkers that abused the privilege ruined this for you, not the company.

Which metrics would those be? We’ve yet to have anyone give us any metrics around how RTO has impacted the business, and we’ve asked our supervisors and the VPs. They don’t have any and can’t give a straight answer. Only metrics we have are company financials and last I checked we are behind now even with all the layoffs due to operating expenses being so high. Gee I wonder why? They should have just terminated the folks not doing anything and left the rest of us to do what we do.

2 years ago my team had 4 full-time remote workers and 1 worker who refused to RTO. 3 of the full-time remote workers could never be found when we needed them. Office workers complained and our manager had a meeting with us office workers. We asked why those absentee workers were not fired? Manager said we needed to keep the headcount. Why, if they are never online? Today we understand. In those 2 years we've lost 3 to surplus, the one who refused RTO and 2 of the full-time remote workers. Our manager was thinking ahead. Lazy remote workers serve a purpose. Be patient.

@hh My RTO was also short. I tried it for 2 weeks and then gave my 2 week notice and intended to work from home during my last 2 weeks. Got reassigned as WFT on the third? Day. Now I get more work done in 5 hours than the office clowns. The remaining 3 hours are "me time".

My RTO was 3 days per week for about 2 months. My manager messaged me and said she had great news for me. I was given a WFT designation. Why ask why? I see it as a reward for 4 years of solid work.

Wouldn’t it be nice, if individuals were valued for their meaningful contributions? Regardless where they work? Cracks me up when post after post suggest WFT = goofing off. Not everyone that worked from home goofed off. And not everyone that goes into the office actually works. If you can prove yourself it shouldn’t matter your physical location. Just get rid of the slackers. Sounds simple.

For me, it's not about having to go into an office, but rather the office I have to go into.

When you have no assigned desk and have to hunt for a parking spot just when you get there only reinforces how little they give us a sh@t about anyone. It only reinforces that they don't even care in the least about anyone. It's not about collaboration when you don't actually sit with the people you work with and have to hunt around just to find anyone you might actually do.

RTO is just a tool used to push employees out, and it also makes painfully clear how little you’re valued by the people at the top. Use that awareness to focus on your career. Treat the company as a stepping stone—something you climb to advance professionally and financially and leave in your own terms.

If you’re past the midpoint of your career, let this clarity guide you toward the future you actually want. Make smart financial moves, look for real investments, and prepare your next chapter. You may be stuck with the company for a longer period or until the end of you career, but shift some of that energy toward building the life you want.

Never give 100% to a company that doesn’t value you. Put a meaningful percentage back into yourself.

I’d be fine with RTO if there were an actual sane, logical, or intelligent reason for it. After years of building my expertise and mastering my craft, my work naturally requires independence. All I need is MS Teams—my peers aren’t even local. I used to go deep into my work, put in extra hours for free, even weekends on my own laptop, all in the name of mastery.

Now? I stick to the 8 hours. No more extra initiative, no more working on my own time, my own PC, or my weekends. My self-mastery and discipline now just mean I waste time driving to an office, do my job, hit the 8-hour mark, and leave. Nothing has improved. It all feels like part of an insane top-down agenda pushed by hybrid-drako narcissist CEOs answering to the reptiloid mothership—BlackRock.

All the local peers I used to admire have either been forced to relocate or pushed to look for opportunities outside the company.
