Nobody should think they're safe

Losing my job in the past taught me real quick that nobody is as safe as they think they are, and the moment you settle in, that is when the rug gets pulled. I have been hit twice over the years, and both times I walked around thinking I was set and maybe even a little too sure of myself, which only made the blow land harder. These days I keep my resume fresh, my contacts warm, and my options open, because in this game the surprises never slow down.

Just when I think this place cannot sink any lower, a "manager" makes another bad decision that makes my life even more difficult here. This place is becoming a sweat shop that is ridiculously and unnecessarily process heavy. I honestly think they want to push people to leave on their own to save on severance. I can't believe how my area has rapidly turn to s*** within a meager 3 years. Just done with this place.

@j6 leeway? That’s bloody generous. More like license to snooze. Lazy, inept and highly paid. What a company.

@c0 I don’t think it’s just the big payouts. I think they also get more leeway for poor performance - company has hired some utterly terrible performing managers and they seem to keep their job for a very long time.

Also, so much preferential treatment from HR from what I’ve seen. Seems like some very cosy relationships.

@OP is it discrimination against Americans? Given labor laws are so in favor of companies in the USA compared to employees. In UK and AU, I wonder what the experience has been like?

There’s total double standards from what I’ve observed. If you’re moderately senior, it looks like you get a nice agreed exit with a hefty payout. If you’re junior or mid level, you get the boot bending over.

They should just get rid of useless middle manager layers and also the managers/high paid “leaders” who cause more trouble than actually do work.

I’ve already accepted I’m gonna lose my job. Drove me crazy for the longest time. Didn’t sleep for weeks in July waiting to get sent to the gallows. Would just stare at the ceiling after work. Not today, than tomorrow I thought. No amount of overworking is going to change that. It’s already set. I keep trying to get out, but no one wants to hire. I just wanted a job to eat and stay warm, but I even that’s hard to find these days in Baltimore. Thousands of jobs lost everywhere each week. Truly feels like we’re living in a nightmare that won’t end.
