Can your immediate manager use this opportunity to lay you off

i was the only one riffed in my team and probably the product. Was working ok, not so excellent but not so bad that i will be riffed. Have been in Oracle for 2 years

PIP is a good tool to get rid of employees and it can be used as a form of retaliation. Be cautious! This probably doesn’t happen as much at large tech companies like O, but smaller companies tend to use it quite often out there 👮‍♂🤣🤣🤣🤣

@eg True. But in all my years at O I only saw one IC get placed on PIP, and in my opinion is was a vendetta. He wound up riffed and has a better job now.

Not every direct manager is involved in the RIF planning. I don't even know if any below VP level are commonly told and/or involved in selection. It seems like in all the ones I've gone through both being selected and not selected, my direct manager had no idea it was even coming, other than hearing the rumors, and in a couple cases, this was a Director.

Your manager can use PIP to set you up to get rid of them!

I had a new manager about 2 months ago because they laid off my manager. Didn't get along with the new guy all that well so I'm suspecting he had something to do with my case even though the director new me quite well and in the end it was her decision.

I was picked by my manager after I had filed a harassment case against him! Oracle had no shame in doing anything illegal because they know they have the best lawyers to defend them.

As manager who has had to identify people for a RIF I think you need to appreciate that there is also a different perspective - for most of us it's a horrible thing to have to do to people that you have worked closely with and in the past I have sounded out folks to see if they want to go before I submit my names.

The other consideration is that the work expected of the team doesn't go away - so a massive component of the decision making is - unfortunately, whether you like it or not - the BIG question of "how am I going to be able to deliver the service expected of me" - essentially you have to choose to retain the people who you feel are most likely to enable you to do that.

Anyone that got laid off and didn't want to go - I wish you the very best of luck finding something better, it's an unpleasant aspect of working at Oracle (and other large IT orgs) that these layoffs come with the territory. Although this particular cycle does feel particularly brutal, to the point where I actually think this one will damage Oracle. That said, all the eggs are in the AI basket now, and historically Larry hasn't made a lot of bad calls

@cj in my case they just cut the entire org including managers & director. Looking at the age breakdown in the OWBPA document the # of employees over 50 was X and the # under 50 is X plus 1. Very convenient from a legal POV! My plan B was cash in some assets and retire, I'm done with the world of corporate BS and a whole lot less stressed out having done so.

@bt yep...90% RIFd in my ORG were retirement age even if they didn't want to get RIFd

Yep. Happened to me. Immediate manager got a tip from her VP cronie that layoffs were coming. Gave me a terrible review in July. Nothing I could do. I was gone under cover of the RIF. Instead of being let go under something I could fight, I was let go under "strategic workforce alignment". Brilliant no-trace-retaliation. This manager, still there, worked the system to silence me. I knew it could happen. I just wouldn't kiss her ring. Oh well.

Depends on your org and how they work together (how high your manager is, visibility). It wouldnt be possible where i am. Dont believe everybody angry on this site. Let it behind and find sth way better for yourself.

@OP If you're asking whether you can volunteer yourself to be laid off, the answer is yes. Some approaching retirement age look at it as a means of getting a "package" and also reducing the RIF headcount required, thus helping their broader org (call it a "sacrifice"). It's not guaranteed you'll get your wish, but it's pretty likely.

@b9 Are they crazy? Do they think they will be safe by doing this? It’s just nothing else like digging their own grave… It’s unbelievable how much damage in the head causes staying there too long time.

I heard that some managers volunteered their reports for lay off

So… what exactly your question was…? As discussed here for a few weeks since the intensive layoffs started, there are no exact filters set for laid off employees - there were people working 2,6,12, 28 years with excellent or meet expactations performance. It does not matter, you are just an ID for them.
