TR putting highly tenured employees on plans to avoid paying severance

How is HR or someone at the top think this is a good idea. Several highly tenured employees are being put on 30 plans who have never received warnings or prior poor ratings. If this is the plan to move out employees without paying severance, this should be illegal. #concern #ageism #unethicalHRpractice #values #ethics

@8k6 37 years - do you mean to say you have been with the company since 1989?

@5s0
This is literally what happened to me too! 37 years with exceptional record, but put on a PIP because of not enough documentation about using AI. Had to train offshore replacement, document all my work, release all my projects and then let go without a package. I too was told that there is no money for packages even though some people got them. Don’t kid yourself, HR is on the side of management and will not get involved. Discussing!

@5s0 some people received severance in 2026.

This is absolutely true and I am living proof. 58 years old and worked at Thomson for 29 years. Good reviews for 28 years and then received a partially achieved. No raise and my bonus was cut in half. Weeks later my manager informs that they are putting me on a PIP. Reason given was my failure to incorporate AI into my workflow. Problem is that I used ancient proprietary software used by other groups and couldn’t just add AI into the mix unilaterally. I saw this coming for well over a year. I enquired about a package and was told there was no money available for packages in 2026. Additionally I was told I was to train offshore resources during the PIP despite having trained 2 people in the months prior. I decided to go out on my shield and quit the following day effective immediately. I received no communication from HR or management at all other than a formulaic email to return my laptop. It’s more difficult to unsubscribe from Netflix than resign from Thomson after nearly 30 years. Not surprising given I did exactly what they wanted. Plus side is that I’m feeling infinitely better mentally and physically since I quit.

Be proactive! Join a union. There’s strength in numbers, plus support.

Try being a black woman at TR in a leadership role, if any are left. Btw, don’t make your case to HR until you’ve secured an attorney. HR will never find any wrongdoing.

@1xx I love that there are a 165 comments, but only a single digit number of them are visible. They are censoring HARD. I'm not very familiar with AMAs, so maybe more will get through when it's live.

Document everything, keep the receipts outside of company equipment and control. Record conversations. Create a case for HR to give you your complete employee record. Keep a timeline tied to your evidence. Ask copilot to search through your emails and create a list of ones that could be related. File a complaint with the state attorney general’s office. Don’t wait to find the best lawyer or law firm. Use the bar association directory to find an employment attorney. It may take a dozen or two people doing this to trigger something bigger

@aw make posts on r/TwinCities and other subreddits warning people and post reviews on indeed, glass door, etc.

@w3+1kp3zk76m I wonder whether you'll be saying this when you reach "old" status.

@f9 same old tired rhetoric by the same old (pun intended) people. Ageism this, ageism that

Totally fake - they can pretend these 30 day plans are not PIPs but they are and the law will see through it!

If this is the case, can anyone recommend a good law firm?

@c5 Then they should lay them off and not put the on bogus plans, this is ageism. There is a right and wrong way to do this, not providing severance for downsizing or eliminating positions and instead casting it as a performance issue is unethical not to mention creates a poor employer brand.

Are they targeting older employees? It would make sense as they are more expensive to layoff.

I have an idea that could damage them. If everyone here teamed up and created anonymous LinkedIn profiles and commented on their Thomson Reuters page LinkedIn posts about their pip quotas to avoid paying severance and how barbaric it is. it would hurt their reputation badly. That’s what we should do. But I guarantee you no one will organize.

Nothing you can do. You played the corporate game and now it’s backfiring on everyone. It’s a dangerous game. Almost every big company does this. Look up meta and raising the bar on performance and stack ranking pips.

It will take an uprising in this country to change anything which no one will do.
