Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

FOW Managers Meeting

More draconian language today in the managers Q&A for FOW. You must be in office 3 days a week, 8 hours per day. If you don't comply with the spirit of the policy, there will be consequences!

Also, one of the presenters is dialing in from home (on an anchor day, no less)! Bad look.

I just want to mention that “future of work” is a ridiculous phrase intended to normalize and to make “cheery” something neither normal, necessary, wanted, or pleasant - forcing people into offices by authoritarian mandate.
I, for one, refuse to use the phrase. For those of us who aren’t required to use it as managers, let’s do our best to avoid that phrase in our offices.

I am two miles from being outside the 50. So based on milage, current mpg I get on my vehicle, the time * minute pay rate to drive back and forth, I need about $30k extra a year to cover my time and gas. That doesn't even cover wear and tear nor if I have to get a new vehicle due to high mileage on it.
I average about 2k miles per year on my vehicle, if we stay at 3 days, that's going to add almost 14k miles per year. If we got to 5 days, then it jumps to 23k.
I was hired in as WFH many years ago. So this is going to be a major hit to my finances. But they don't care about that.

To the reporter below:

What sort of information do you need. ?
Why do you need someone specific to contact you?

Just trying to know as people might be scared to come out and contact a journalist for the fear of losing their job or severance if they are already laid off.

There is a lot of information being posted here. Can’t this be your source ?

"I can't wait until all this reaches the media and the masses.

I posted this on another thread, but a couple journalists had posted this awhile ago when this was first happening (from a 10/24 thread). In case anyone can help with exposing this.

Hi, I'm a reporter at POLITICO, interested in hearing more about these recent layoffs. Email me at khooper@politico.com. Happy to provide my number on Signal as well.

Journalist here. I'm looking to speak with people affected by layoffs at Cigna and other insurers. Email me at kayla.webster@ft.com

And also, office attendance comes with the additional free bonus of time micromanagement. This is not applicable to any remote days and represents an additional negative to coming back in.

Cigna/Evernorth hates working mothers.
They also don't like caregivers, or employees with special needs kids.
Heck, they don't like responsible, self-starters who get their work done from home either.
And they absolutely don't want anyone over 50 who isn't an ELT member. So add ageist to Cigna's profile and it's ELT's too.
They think their employees are imbeciles. "We heard that people really feel that in person collaboration is the best way to work and important for the success of our business."
Um, give us an f-ing break.
We had the best, most productive years when the whole dang company was w@h.
Clearly, you learned nothing from COVID, d.c., other than how to count your money.
Grow a set and just lay people severance if attrition is what you crave. Pay out the packages, quit the cat and mouse approach you're doing to avoid WARN reporting and negative press.
Close/release the unwanted real estate rather than torturing your dedicated staff. Quit putting the tax break you get in CT over your people's quality of life/work life balance.
Being forced to report in person after often over a decade working from home hits each of us financially, wastes precious time for pointless commutes to buildings where we then get on webex calls with our team mates scattered across the country who are lucky enough not to have to report in to HQ. (Add global warming to the list of offenses)
This company has enough money to pay their employees packages and still do extremely well.
We're a cash cow for pete's sake. EVERYONE knows that.
Take your focus off your own enormous personal portfolios and do right by the people who keep the cash cow alive.
Stop focusing on inflating stocks. You have enough money. You're a billionaire already. Your greed, deceitfulness and indifference sicken me.
Start being a decent human being.
No one wants you as the ring master to this circus.
Move along.
It's ironic that you make your money on the 'we care about people' platform.
The he-l you do.
I can't wait until all this reaches the media and the masses.
The truth ALWAYS gets out.
It may take time, but it'll surface.
Can't. f-ing. wait.

Cindy Ryan, a career HR professional, replaced John Murabito upon his retirement. She is now gone because she advocated for employees and flexibility.

Ryan has been replaced by Nic0le Jone and K@ri Stevens- both lawyers.

J0nes salary was cited in a 2023 article as $850,000 base and $5,200,000 total.

I think I liked this last ladys philosophy a whole lot better...

"It’s important to note that – broadly across the company – we're not dictating when people need to come back to the office. We are working with managers to help them think about the times during which in-person office work would drive better outcomes. Outside of that, we are giving people the autonomy to choose what works best for them, so that they don’t need to choose between success in work and success in life.

That autonomy helps us show our employees that we see them as people, and that we are giving them control over their work experience,” -Cindy Ryan.

"for those who are the only team member in your current office... they answered that in 2 parts. First, they tried to spin it so you could network with others.. but the second part, they said they're evaluating and even if you take account for networking maybe 3 days doesn't make sense. So basically still pending, but hopefully they end up changing this policy for those of us who are solo in office where every other teammate are at other locations."

That's the most encouraging thing I've heard for those of us in this situation. It extra pi---s me off to have to waste all that time driving in only to sit on Webex meetings all day with people in other states/India.

I believe other business unit employees can move into MA. MA employees are black listed from other cigna business units.

If you want to move over to MA ask the hiring manager or team if they got the March email confirming they are going to HCSC. If they got an email they’ll know what you’re asking about.

"Jumping ship to Medicare before they get sold off to HCSC kinda looks promising. I hear many of them will remain WFH."

As I understand it, they are not letting folks transfer in or out of Medicare as part of an agreement in the pending sale.

@1ian+1scUSWG9

It wouldn’t but it changes the spirit of the policy as a whole in my opinion. Right now it’s 2 mandatory days with a floating 3rd day in office. If schools nationally adopt 4 days, they might want to remove that 3rd day component if they decide to continue with a 5 day work week cause nobody, regardless if you have kids or not, will be in the office Monday or Friday.
Also to keep in mind I’ve seen in the news and online, even 5 work days are losing steam as some industries start to pilot the idea of a 4 day—32 hour week schedule.

It's sad that the whole panel consisted of females, while the updated policy will on a majority will negatively impact female employees. I'm not saying that it won't affect our male co workers, but many more females are caretakers. It's been studied and proven that the move to W@H during the pandemic has provided the opportunity, where there wasn't before, for females to acheive greater and make more money. I'm sure the company is doing this to get people to quit so they don't have to layoff, but it's being done in bad taste. I'm beyond disgusted and lost all trust.

Well school districts are starting to toy with the idea of shifting to a 4 day week. Was just passed in PA. This policy might need to be revisited again in the near future.

@ctq+1scUSWG9 “Policy FAQs allow Management discretion in some respects is my interpretation.”

Other than FMLA and PTO, a manager needs Band 6 approval for someone to not follow the policy for a limited time. I don’t see VPs giving out lots of approvals. To be classified as WAH if you have been designated in-office requires Band 7 approval. Someone in my org had to get sign off from Noelle to stay WAH.

Managers have been getting pulled into meetings with HR and are being told they have to enforce this, they have to write up non-compliant employees on a PIP and if they don’t they can get written up themselves.

So far what 8 hour window you need to be there is still flexible. As is when you take your third full 8 hour day. Expect that flexibility to go away too if not enough people quit. Then expect 4 days in if that doesn’t work.

ELT is has created a budget that assumes attrition and if payroll isn’t reduced enough, it will get worse.

Good luck if you want to stay. Going to be a very sour second half of the year.

For the below question , I believe the first part should be flexible. But no t sure I am not HR.

But next question is pretty interesting. In one way they want collaboration. Lunch breaks should be encouraged. But what about people who don’t take lunch breaks? Wouldn’t they want to leave an hour early or even complain about people who do take lunch breaks.

I in all honesty would love to eat at my desk and save an hour in my day.

Did they specify the below things?

  1. Does it have to be 9-5 ? Or 10-6 or 8-4 is allowed ?
  2. If someone takes lunch break , do they have to stay 9 hours in total ?

Was it K@ri who dialed in from her million dollar suburban Philadelphia home? I found it appalling she tried to tell us she can relate to those financially challenged by this ridiculous policy. “I live outside Philadelphia.” “Umm in a million dollar home and pulling in an ELT lawyer salary.”

Policy FAQs allow Management discretion in some respects is my interpretation. Otherwise the entire policy is completely unfair and creates an air of extreme resentment. 15,000 employees monitored hours/minutes in said office while simultaneously the vast majority (similar roles, same roles, moved away etc.) remain free to work from home untethered. Best of luck retaining talent.

Did they specify when and how they are responding to people who decide not to comply? 90 day warning and then termination?

Post ID: @ulz+1scUSWG9

“Does that need to be 8 hours or you can spread it to 4th day ? Overall I believe they need 24 hours out of 40?”

The policy is very specific. That third day of your choice needs to be 8 hours as well, unless you take 4 or more hours of PTO. Read the policy on IRiS. It was written by legal and spells out everything.

The only flexibility we now have is what day that third day will be. Guess they haven’t been reading the research showing that reducing flexibility is disastrous for companies. Not that they care.
