Thread regarding Optum layoffs

RIF's are coming soon to WellMed

I work for WellMed. We are now under Optum, it's been about a month. I was told with this transition, they will be making cuts immediately as soon as next week. A lot of people dont know this is gonna happen so i know its going to shake people up (rightfully so). Its very unsettling the amount of layoffs the entire organization goes through every year. I've only been here for 7 years and every year, there are layoffs. They cut people, don't replace them, or if they do its with AI or they dont promote employees.

@291 where do these people get their info ? Anytime I’ve been laid off it was completely hush hush until the day of. No one knew. Those saying Sept and Oct how do u know? Managers aren’t made aware until that day as well

@285 in claims as well. Can confirm all of this. I have a feeling it’s just a matter of time before we are done

I work in claims. We had unlimited overtime for close to 2 years, then it suddenly stopped. Inventory has been very low. This happened a few months before being told we were transitioning to optum. Now we are working claims w a received date of the day prior. Whoever distributes the work has been shutting down the bots so there is actual work for us to process. Or we process the really cr-ppy claims that India isn’t trained on. Town hall on Aug 20, The man in charge was asked if we would move from IKA to facets and his response was No. Doesn’t look to promising for claims

@1fd idk how true this is, but the guy in charge of core operations stated wellmed would not be moving to facets, at least there’s no talk of it now. So who knows

Optum owned part of Wellmed but not the whole, it sounds like that has changed. That means Wellmed is being integrated into Optum Care completely. Likely claims will be moved from IKA to OCSP Facets, which is already staffed, but may need some of those claim processors from Wellmed, but not all I imagine. Expect other departments to follow the rules integration path.

@1cr I am confused on this. How is the work going to go to UHC when optum technically owns wellmed? Wouldn’t optum take over the claims ? Also, do we know when any of this stuff is going to happen? Any timeline?

@ew Yes, and the sad part is that the claim work that will be going back to UHC Claims department from Wellmed will be "absorbed", meaning they are taking the work and have to manage it with the people they already have. Keep in mind UHC claims has gone through some major upheavals the last 2 years and it is really bad, especially in government claims. All of the people who either quit or took the VRSP just recently had their "last day". It has quickly become a disaster under Joe Barber and more pain is coming as the effects of the VSRP become real. He said we were not getting any people with the Wellmed work. That to me means if the Wellmed people didnt transfer into other jobs then they will be laid off when the work transfers.

Most of the tech in wellmed is already Indian based so cuts to USA people and vp and above. Any vp tech leader is potentially on the chopping block.

Wellmed had been a part of optum since 2010 or so. But I am guessing more of it was recently sold or all of it and now there will be full integration under Optum/ uhg where departments will be closed and layoffs occur depending on duplication.

I’ve worked for WellMed for over 20 years and the layoffs didn’t start until 2023 when we started converging more with Optum and as with all mergers, duplicate positions, always lose some.

Layoffs at WellMed were ongoing every year for 7 years? I don’t work with WellMed but it sounds like Optum bought a distressed business if that is the case, and unfortunately will probably liquidate everything except the contracts with payers.
