Thread regarding Canon Inc. layoffs

How Are You Motivating Yourself to Keep Going?

Usually, I have no issues with self-motivation, but this last round of layoffs has made me especially disheartened. It’s getting more and more obvious by the day that this company cannot be repaired. Giving up on people, cutting back on business hours, switching to cheaper technology tools, and on and on and on…that does not signify a healthy company that is expecting a bo-m.

What are you doing to stay focused other than making sure you can pay your mortgage/rent, feed your family, etc.?

I tell myself that I am going to start job searching, but I’m just totally wiped out by the end of the day to put any serious effort into it.

I feel trapped. I have no idea what is next. So much for “nothing is changing other than the company name on your paycheck”. One of PK’s great lies.

My head is spinning with all of this uncertainty and constant change in priorities.

Everything s*cks so bad, it’s only going to get worse from here.

During my last days with Canon, my wife saw how downtrodden I was, and would remind me of Colossians 3:23. It helped, but didn't delay the layoff of C05827.

@22f Thought it was hilarious about the stalls. And AI can't clean stalls in the men's room.

Don't worry about the company. Just worry about yourself. Hang on to your job as long as the check keeps coming. Not only your company is changing, but most companies are changing due to this AI. Every company is trying to figure out how to fit AI into their processes. So just hang in there, do what you have to keep the job. What helps me is I say hello, and have a great day to everyone I pass in the hallway. You say it enough time to them and one day, they start a conversation, and you get to know someone else in the company that you didn't before.
In my company since covid, not many people show up. You'll be lucky if you find someone in the hallway after standing there for half an hour. But I drive into work, listen to Bloomberg radio for economic news, smile while saying good morning to the security guard, and sing a song in my head while walking to my office. Than make some coffee, read the emails, and start working. Everyday, it's the same routine, but I just say to myself, I got paid one more day instead of being without a job. Now I'm one day closer to retirement.

Just log into your bank account and see the history of the pay checks. That should motivate you when you think about how you're still able to pay the bill, have a roof over your head, feed the family, have health insurance, have heat to warm up your house and running hot water to shower with, and electric or gas to fill your car so you and your family can drive to the store, can afford to go on vacation or eat out once in a while, can pay those student loans and credit card bills as well as the mortgage and property tax, the wireless internet and phone bills, and still have a few dollars saved for a rainy day. And not have to worry much and sleep well at night. Isn't that a great motivation to get up everyday to go to work. Now image if you were laid off in this economy and couldn't find a job for over six months and not counted towards the unemployment numbers reported by the gov't. And on top of that, have all your bills piled up, and can't afford to even go to the dentist for that aching tooth that needs a root canal. Life is so much better with a job and a paycheck. Let that be your motivator.
