@gq If you can run circles around your boss, if your boss is an incompetent twit, if your boss comes to YOU with questions about technology, but then gets very threatened by you, RAISE YOUR HAND

@3ae I remember this person. She was on the taller side. Maybe 5'10'. If I recall form the water cooler chatter, one of tall woman's staff went to HR about the privacy issue of doing a background check on people you work with and other things. They also called another EE in for questioning. The other EE wasn't happy about being called to HR because she had already stopped speaking to the tall woman (trying not to give to much away as far as descriptions). What's so interesting and funny is that Seagate EEs thought they were a couple and had a rift. You could hear employees whispering about it at their desks. I don't know about the tall woman, but I do know the other EE didn't participate in that lifestyle. She was one of those who kept her personal life to herself. Nothing wrong with that. I believe she recently lost her sister to cancer.

Love the company management way. HOD doesn’t even understand what is really happening in his department but ask some business school to survey the leadership skills.

I’ve interrupted the end of meetings where people are overusing an acronym in discussion for an hour to ask in an innocent voice what it stands for. I’ve had meetings with multiple engineers and directors where NOBODY knew. Basically an entire meeting where nobody even knew what they were talking about. I can’t do it very often or I’ll be caught being a troublemaker. You need to find comedy where you can during the workday..

@3hf Use long acronyms.,
I agree: A simple explanation makes it obvious and untrusted. A abbreviation works great. People assume it is magic and do not dare to admit that they do not know. Works not just at Seagate this way. Also WD

Y'all thinking too hard about this. It’s a job. You work. You get paid. 40 hours a week. No more. No less. If you hate it, move on. It’s still rewarding and fun for many of us. The secret to a long career (with many patents) is to learn to master filtering the executive “we can fix your engineering problem 30 min meeting decisions”. Always use a one page slide with arrows on a positive slope. Yes. Put that AI to work to show a positive even when the yield has tanked. It’s doable. Use long acronyms. Make some up. I never get asked what they mean. Classic was WMFOMA. If you recognize it. You were in the meeting. When monkeys fly out my azz. Stay positive my fellow Seagators.

This company will chew you up and sp-t you out. They've gotten rid of so many people over the years in IT and tax. If I remember correctly, they got rid of the entire tax team except for the directors a few years ago.
Some departments are so cutthroat that backstabbing feels like part of the culture. One woman took it to extremes—she reportedly ran background checks on every member of her team and even recorded conversations with colleagues, all during work hours. It was a full-blown HR disaster. Not sur what she hoped to gain. No idea where she ended up, but rumor has it she’s now at a software or electric vehicle company nearby. Odds are, she’s still digging into the personal histories of both new and former coworkers.

I would say if you're unhappy leave. It's the best thing you could do for yourself.

@1se Some are going to get paid for nothing and others are going to be very disappointed. It is a culture of no accountability and disrespect unless you are in that non-inclusive club.

@1fr just wake up? When were surveys ever fully anonymous or meaningful

The surveys have become a meaningless joke. The overall ranking is always biased by the 90%+ approval ratings by Thai workers. They obviously are not feeling free to cast any negative opinions. I also mostly score neutral, because we have a small group and it wouldn't take much work by the manager to figure out who scored him/her low.

I'm one who just rates neutral or prefer not to answer to every survey question. My boss says do the survey so I do as instructed. I'm amused the prefer not to answer is even a choice. I get a kick out of doing so and watching the bosses eventually discover from public interrogation meetings who gave the bad marks. I just sit worry free with a smile and a shrug and say I didn't put any bad marks so beats me. Then I quietly chuckle back at my desk especially when negative survey comments are owned up too in those meetings. I also get a secret chuckle when they start to ask in fake puzzlement why people are selecting neutral or prefer not to answer and it must mean they are ok with how it's going. You have to find good comedy where you can during the work week.

@1a4 they cop out in part because surveys lack anonymity and leaders don’t really want to know bc then they might have to actually do something about it

@168 External employee surveys show unfavorable ratings compared to other companies. If you throw out the ones just collecting the check it is even worst. That is a result of management and the false culture propaganda. The only reason internal surveys show favorable results is because 1. Employees cop out when rating their managers and choose neutral responses and 2. The company takes those neutral responses as a positive. There is a quite a bit of quid pro quo between poor managers and their subordinates in terms of employee surveys and performance reviews. It is " i will not report that you su-k if you continue to give favorable reviews". There are a lot of employees, mostly in management collecting charity from the ones solving the problems. The company should expect more from management besides collecting status, stating the obvious and repeating what has already been said. Can any of them say "better, faster, cheaper". Nothing has really changed with systems and processes in probably 20 years. The end result is the employees that do the work are frustrated with their compensation and quit the company or quiet quit. It is not a good environment to work in. That is Seagate culture.

a rather strong statement when there is nary a company out there that someone won't find something they don't like about it. It's about culture, and if one is not aligned with the culture, or cannot tolerate it, is that the company's fault, I would argue not.

With any company you are a number on a badge. The grass is not greener. There are good and bad bosses everywhere and nothing can make a company more toxic than a bad boss or blatant tribalism.

The best solution is to quit. Don’t hate anyone, don’t hate the company. You feel free. You will love everyone and the company

Why hate a company? It is business. If not happy move on. Take your services to a place you believe will appreciate you.

Not emotional about a soulless business legal entity that cares nothing about me beyond how it can use me to profit and discard me when I become a liability. Just keep it real and act accordingly. If you are making yourself available 24/7 and giving all your life force to this entity you need to get your head checked. Quiet quit as much as possible. Seriously.
