When Leadership Fails, Everything Follows - You Can Dress It Up, But You Can’t Hide It

I’m gonna say this plain and simple — this company is rotten at the core.

I’m telling you, the experience was beyond frustrating. It’s the kind of disappointment that sticks with you, not because of what happened, but because of how it all went down.

What really gets me is the lack of integrity in leadership. The SC leader — all flash, no follow-through — will tell his team one thing, turn right around and tell senior leadership something else, and somehow still walk away taking credit for work that ain’t his. That doesn’t happen by accident. That’s a culture that allows it.

I sat through that Appian World presentation and just thought… “this is what we’re backing?” It wasn’t just weak — it was a clear case of style over substance. And the fact that nothing changes after something like that? That tells you exactly what this company values — and what it doesn’t.

Folks who put in the work, who show up and deliver, they’re the ones getting pushed out. No fairness, no honesty. And yeah, that leaves a bad taste. Not because of the outcome — I’ll land on my feet — but because of the way it was handled. When there’s no transparency and no accountability, trust doesn’t stand a chance.

And if you want proof beyond the inside story, just look at the market. Ten years public, and the stock’s barely moved. That ain’t bad luck — that’s a signal.

This isn’t a company hitting a rough patch. This feels like one that’s lost its direction altogether.

If you’re on the SC side of the business, I’d take a long, hard look at where things are headed. Don’t sit around waiting for it to turn — by the time it’s obvious, you’re already in it.

Sales always gets the ire in these threads but no one talks about product strategy - does anyone know how SJ is still here? There are a number of strong leaders who have left because of him and it seems there are no repercussions.

Let’s be honest, all GA did was rehash everything he stole from ServiceNow. SC 2.0 (even though his implementation of it is horrible), the customer stories had to be redone what, 3 times before legal didn’t want to fire him over the blatant plagiarism, demo hub (the exact same thing they call it at ServiceNow). Literally no difference than what ServiceNow did 3-4 years ago. Appian was just so behind the times that his old, rehashed SC 2.0 mesmerized CEO Game Wizard. Total joke.

King GA is hands down the best thing that’s ever happened to Appian. The guy’s an absolute powerhouse presenter. The second he starts talking, the whole room locks in. Customers don’t just listen, they’re ready to sign the check before the meeting’s even over.

Honestly, the company wouldn’t be where it is without his talent, instincts, and vision. If you ask me, he oughta have a seat on the board and the authority to help shape the future direction of the company. And between us, he’d probably make one he-l of a CRO too

For all the AI hype this company pushes, the reality is there’s barely any real AI in the product.... The innovation stopped long time ago.. its now on life support!!!... The company is building an image around capabilities it simply doesn’t have. Talk about false advertising.... The CEO wants a seat in the "AI governance" table alongside Elon..

At this point, I’ve honestly lost all hope. I’m here like many others just collecting a paycheck$$ until they eventually hand me a settlement package. The entire SC team seems to be in the same mindset. And so are many others.. This is one company where even the HR is fed up and is running away ..

What’s embarrassing is having to put on a fake smile every day in front of this clown leading the SC organization just to get through the day. Every time he gets on stage, people in the audience laugh and crack jokes behind his back. But somehow he thinks he’s being celebrated. Someone asked what rhymes with Orange... watch him and youll know..

He’s basically the Appian version of Trump .. all show, no substance and full of lies..

And you’re absolutely right about him taking credit for other people’s work. He’ll gladly throw others under the bus if it helps protect himself. It’s honestly unbelievable that someone this spineless and self-serving is leading the organization.
That said, for the founders, he’s apparently a gift from heaven.

Let’s see what happens when the market turns. In the end, we’ll be the ones getting the last laugh.

BTW, hi Bob. Nice to see you speak up in here. You never seem to open your mouth in the company meetings or defending good people..

Sounds like SC 2.0 spammer.

it's not just the SC organization that is in the trash, the marketing department has never been worse. They keep rewarding poor leaders who are yes men with no vision. Appian is equal parts chaos and bullsh-t, all to cater to the Founders - and that will never change.

The CEO and Founder knows precisely how to run this company and run it well. Appian is an institution that will outlast all hype cycles, including AI. We hire the best out of the best schools, and build software that is literally life changing. As a high impact organization, we will keep our heads down work to completion. Fear not!

I just heard that the new strategy is to pivot away from industry marketing and go completely horizontal. That should work well with respect to completely tanking the company. Also, there is another long-time senior person leaving soon…

I could t agree with you more about the SC leader. He absolutely KI-LED that organization. Once, it was a shining star of Appian, now it’s a culture of busywork and fear. I don’t know if a SINGLE SC that is happy with the leader or the current direction. It’s a disaster. Avoid at all costs.

Appian has been like this for ages. It’s stems form the top and Matt’s ego. One of the most toxic places I’ve ever worked. No accountability no leadership and rudderless. It’s even worse now with the Salesforce maffia in EMEA led by VN. Utterly useless.

Appian has always been a bunch of "yes" men in vests. Just a bunch of jargon and rushed strategy.
