I wasn't here in 2008. Now I'm worried about what will happen if the recession hits. What did the past recession look like in this company from your perspective?
LINWOOD, NC HUMP
Anyone heard of callbacks for Linwood hump yard? More specifically Mechanical side? Axed 80
They are putting pressure on us to leave
At one point, my boss started putting more and more pressure on me until his demands became completely unrealistic. I'm sure I'm not the only one? If I had a better offer, I would have left, but I didn’t, so I tried to do as much as I could because... — read more
What will happen to us if a recession hits?
What do you think?
Union contract
I keep hearing $3.75/hr in raises over next 5 years and insurance going up to $369 per month. Wish they would hurry up already
How many execs have been fired?
They keep cutting the people that do the work. Now the STB on their case. You reap what you sow.
They will keep piling on the work
I'm overworked already, but that doesn't stop NS from constantly giving me even more work to do. The more I work, the more work I get. When is it finally enough? Perhaps they should consider replacing us with robots , because there are not... — read more
They just want an even cheaper workforce
At first I thought NS will do something to prevent the departure of the best employees. Then I thought the leadership realized it couldn’t keep the best. Now I'm starting to think that it actually suits them that we are all slowly leaving so that... — read more
CSX Has a Shortage of Workers!
In fact, CSX CEO Jim Foote said the rail carrier has been turning down business recently due to a lack of capacity. Foote said the problems were the result of labor shortages, saying that the carrier has struggled to recruit enough workers to meet... — read more
How much is life worth ?
For newer employees recently hired you have you’re reasons . I completely understand. 28yrs in this game I can tell you this is a huge mistake to trust any class one railroad …The face you have never seen or voice you have never heard just walk away... — read more
Call backs at JLS!!
Looking like all crafts will see some good numbers being called back after July 4th from very reliable sources.
Retaining good employees
They think only short term and therefore do not try to retain good, quality employees. Instead they are more focused on hiring new people. Yes, I think the reason for that is precisely that none of them at the top think long term. However, it... — read more
I would never go back
Who are these people who would return to the National Assembly after it was made clear to them that this company does not value them in the least? Someone really needs to be very desperate to come back here.
NS does not deserve good employees
This company is actually very lucky that some, despite their marketable skills, are afraid to leave and start over. It's scary to even think about what all this will look like in a few years.
Keep in mind...
If we ever enter SHTF all failroads have a continuity of business plan to keep and retrieve employees... so don't answer the door when they come ... this is your only warning .

Just called back
I've been furloughed for 2.5 years. Just got called back as a carman. I know what everyone says about NS but I'm going back. I'm tired of working hard for less money. Weekends and first shift aren't what they're cracked up to be. I haven't even been... — read more
Food for thought
When I got my job with NS I thought I struck gold. Only to realize my weekends and social life as an 19 would be taken from me just like that. I stuck to the plan kept on working on. I worked with some of the best guys and women. With very bright... — read more

They hire people just to get rid of them

Shareholders ruined a Legacy
Nothing is built Nothing is back Nothing is better. Sounds like NS adopted the same philosophy.
Been laid off for a while now…
What is life like these days in the loco shops? Just curious should I decide to go back if called. Thank you.

Layoff targets
I was hired a few months ago. Does that mean I can feel safe, or can I still be a target even though I only recently got a job? Some tell me that NS will not cut those who have recently been hired, but others tell me that it would not be unusual... — read more

Factors driving the disconnect between executives and employees?
I think the biggest problems here stem from the disconnect between executives and the workers. They are not in the least interested in feedback from employees. Of course the divide has a very bad effect on the company. What factors do you think... — read more

A strategy that leads to ruin
It really doesn't make any sense. NS is offering $5K starting bonuses for conductor trainees, so the company is pretty much begging for new employees, and on the other hand, it "motivates" those same new employees to give notice and leave from day... — read more
Juniata Callbacks
Don't get too excited, they are only calling back what has quit or retired in the last 6-8 months. This will be the new normal. The company is he-l bent on the operating ratio, and they are still above 60%.
NS hiring
They need to bring back locations for potential hires to come and test and be free to ask questions, instead you now have to have a webcam and do it virtually. It's lazy and furthermore separates the face to face meeting experience. I wanted to... — read more
