Companies are reducing middle managers - increasing spans, reducing layers. Both good things to do as it prevents micro-management (bigger spans) and decisions get taken faster (fewer layers).
BUT
- Will create fewer career progression options for employees - So folks will be open to moving between companies - Higher attrition
- Talent pipeline and succession will be more difficult as the pool is smaller
- Will need to create in band salary increases which are often very tough to administer and always drives a feeling of inequality.
