Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Layoff Blog Draft – Brutal & Forensic

Sampath strikes again with his favorite sport: talking down to the workforce while pretending he’s discovered management philosophy. Translation of his post: “We cut middle managers, slowed promotions, shrank the talent pool, and guaranteed attrition… but hey, decisions move faster!”

This isn’t leadership, it’s narcissism with a LinkedIn filter. Only a CEO at Verizon could brag about hollowing out the company while admitting it leaves employees with fewer career paths, worse pay equity, and higher churn. Then he pats himself on the back for “fewer layers.”

It’s not strategy, it’s shrinkage dressed up as innovation. The BSG boy is just narrating his own PowerPoint slides.

Companies are reducing middle managers - increasing spans, reducing layers. Both good things to do as it prevents micro-management (bigger spans) and decisions get taken faster (fewer layers).
BUT

  1. Will create fewer career progression options for employees - So folks will be open to moving between companies - Higher attrition
  2. Talent pipeline and succession will be more difficult as the pool is smaller
  3. Will need to create in band salary increases which are often very tough to administer and always drives a feeling of inequality.

Funny how this “efficiency” play is always sold as a win for speed and agility, yet the hidden cost is churn, lost mentorship, and a hollowed-out talent bench. Flattening looks great on paper until you realize people stop seeing a future where they are — and start seeing the exit door.

I don’t know who ever bought into Level Up, but you’re supposed to get a 10% raise for an increase in title if the pay band minimum doesn’t take you even higher.

Level Up gets you a promotion without a requisition, but at 3% without ever getting your other 7%.
