No mentors at Oracle that I can see. Lots of greedy a--holes about though. Everyone seems to be trying to get something for nothing. Totally corrupt company.

My mentor said: get some experience and move on. 7 years in, I am still at Oracle. I think I should have listened better.

Sorry, @4mhr should read "hard to find a good one" not "hard to find a god one"

I'd love to have a mentor. Hard to find one.

iak

I had a similar experience with a former manager, who left Oracle, and the tried to recruit m to join him at his new company. We got together for coffee, while he told me about what a big haste it was, having to deal with his 50k in vested stocks. Stocks, I might add that were his job to distribute. Evidently, he felt that they would retain a high value if concentrated in his account.

I paid for coffee, and left

"Watch your back, all the time and do not trust pretty much anyone" - never failed me at Oracle.

Immediately after telling me that our org would not be getting bonuses that year and that my request for a raise was denied, my boss then tells me the "great news" that he had been promoted and it included a big pay bump. From the look on my face, he must have realized the awkward timing and then went on a rant how his promotion is good for the org. He explained that his higher profile will trickle down to all of us, we would all have higher respect in TK's org, and that we should be grateful to him. He ended our 1:1 thanking me for my hard work because my contributions were instrumental to his advancement.

I remember that conversation vividly when I make decisions on managing my current team as it was the perfect negative example of how to put yourself before others.

Actually when he finally left Oracle I thanked him for teaching me so many valuable lessons.. he gave me an odd look because I think he realized that specifically omitted "good" or "positive".

If you don't like the way things are at Oracle, wait two minutes.
