Agree with much of what's been posted here. The problem is that TR never encouraged skill development or training (software development, web or mobile application, Agile methodology, etc.) and kept everything job-specific and in silos. So, when you're thrown into the new employment landscape, your experience doesn't match your abilities, which fall far short of what companies expect now.

And, before someone says something, I acknowledge that I was equally complicit by becoming too complacent in my TR role -- no matter how well I did it. Hopefully, those still at TR can learn from our errors and prepare themselves…

That is true. The former Thomson regime actively encouraged training and professional growth -- anyone remember Thomson University? Some of the best hard and soft skills training was offered through these onsite and offsite courses. Attendance in 2 courses was part of the annual goals. And, those skills informed much of my later performance and contributions.

I've never worked for any company that encourages or provides significant skills development or training that would advance my career. Yeah, HR talks about some training catalog for skills development blah blah blah - typically those are superficial courses at best. I've always sought out additional education/skills development on my own so that the next place I work for, I can demand more money. While individual managers may be supportive generally, expecting management or HR to encourage or provide professional development opportunities is like hoping Santa will bring me a Daisy Red Ryder Air Rifle BB Gun for Christmas.

I agree. RIA and Thomson did encourage skill development but it all changed when it became Thomson Reuters.
