Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

How is it to work at HCL?

Has anybody heard any info what is it really like to work for HCL. There are a lot of people on this board, so I imagine there is at least someone who came on to some info about that. Also I would like to know does anyone get to stay longer, or is training your replacement a general principle of business at HCL?

What is the one component impacting a Xerox sale to another company? The large amount of labor or workforce still on the books. Moving a lot of people to HCL makes it easier for Xerox to divest itself of components to other companies. No bad news for the new company by having to let go of a bunch of workers. It is now HCL's bag to hold.

At that point, HCL will let go of the rebadged workers since they no longer have the contract with that "Xerox" divestiture.

HCL makes money in the meantime charging Xerox for the labor which was rebadged. Money that they would not have made prior to the rebadging (guarantee there is a built-in profit for HCL and probably a bonus clause in the contract if the work from Xerox terminates early.)

Borrowed time is how you should look at it. Time which should be spent brushing up your resume and interviewing skills or planning for early retirement.

I went thru the whole El Segundo shutdown. Don’t make any mistake, HCL wants to exchange you for someone cheaper and back in India. Your job now is to make sure they can’t. Don’t give them a reason to let you go, but also don’t expect a pleasant time.

Here’s the truth. Indian companies are not like American. There is rampant ageism and s-xism. The first is hard to get around. The second is “toughen up”; HCL’s HR is not going to care if some Indian male talks down to a female. Cultural. India is not America. It was eye opening for me. 60 is ancient in India, as in elderly. Freshers are what they want.

Make sure to never badmouth your Indian boss. Expect your boss to hide his shortcomings by blaming the staff, especially if American. Expect the boss to favor Indian staff members. Don’t get offended if they conduct meetings in a foreign language.

Positive things you can do. Don’t ever ask about caste systems or meanings of dots or anything like that. HCL is an Indian company, don’t forget they “won” the battle. Learn cricket, seriously. It’s an ice breaker and makes you look team spirited. Learn a little geography of India. If it helps, remember every single HCL employee would love to become an American citizen!

For those who get outsourced the key question to ask management is what is the ultimate goal for work distribution between onshore and offshore and when is the target for meeting that goal. As an example it may be something like 80/20 within 5 years. A secret to outsourcing that is rarely mentioned is that attrition is the lowest cost to shed workers and layoffs are the most expensive. Thus the entire process is set up to make people want to quit.

Do you think they are planning on keeping all of us? What is the cost savings keeping us with same salary when they can outsource our jobs for a lot less? If you are smart, you will know the answer that we are all being outsourced.

Xerox sold us to an Indian company with no hesitation. HCL will be able to have many job opportunities in their country while thousands of Americans will be jobless.

Get out while you can! Don't wait for your severance cause HCL will find a way to screw you out of it.

To Xerox, we would appreciate it if you would stop telling us we are not being outsourced and that we have plenty of opportunity with HCL. The fact we've been "rebadged" to HCL is called being outsourced! We have yet to be provided with the statistics in how many were hired on after "project " has been completed.

I too am doing the same job. There are growing pains as we are trying to learn another company's culture but they have been patient with us. I wish I could same say the same thing for some of the former Xerox employees. I am embarassed when they talk during these learning conference calls. Many act like children and take out their anger at Xerox at HCL. The HCL employees have been nothing but respectful to us and are trying their best to answer every question...as rude as some they are. Come on people. You're now working for a new company. Try to act like adults!

From the batch that was sold off 8 years ago, the handful that are left get better benefits than those of us at Xerox. Thought I believe the severance is much lower. A few others still work for HCL via other places and lost vacation time in the process. about 3/4's of the original batch, if not more, are gone.

Someone help me understand... if you move to HCL and stay with them for several years... what is the benefit for HCL? They are paying you to work for a company that is not theirs. Xerox is no longer paying you but you are doing work for them. I don’t understand this relationship. What is the ultimate end game here? And if it’s not outsourcing (ie: eliminating you) then what is the point of all this?

I know some people that were converted to HCL about 8 or 9 years ago and are still with HCL today. Most of them have nothing but positive things to say.

Totally agree. HCL has been very accommodating to ex-Xerox staff. They are treating their new employees with tremendous deference and respect. Something that has been lacking at Xerox for many years. Glad to be part of this new organization.

So far I am doing my exact same job. After they examine our (all remaining GISX cores) processes I am sure they will make changes. For all of you who are angry at HCL, they did not cause this, Xerox did. Direct your anger where it belongs. HCL just took advantage of a great opportunity.
