Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

You are literally training your replacement and you know it

"I can't imagine they'd let me go after all these years."

Yeah, that's what 1,800+ ex-employees thought in January 2018. They were axed because they were expensive. They were expensive because they were with the company 10,15,20 years or more. 2% increases per year, year after year. Your loyalty only means you're overpaid for your position.

"Our magazine sales have been down, but can't imagine the rest of them know the area like i do, at this point"

You're joking, right? It's a bunch of magazines in a row, not brain surgery. Literally, it would take one day to learn all the ins and outs you accumulated in 17 years. Pulling old magazines and replacing them with newer issues isn't NASA material. Besides, have you noticed how many periodicals are no longer being published? It's all digital and more magazines will cease publications this year. How do think that bodes for your newsstand?

"But, today, again, there i am, showing another kid how to zone my section, where to put returns, etc. The kid seemed uninterested so that might work in my favor."

This statement blows my mind. You are literally training your replacement and you know it. BN doesn't care about how uninterested the kid is, he makes less than half of what you do. That's what BN cares about. The only thing that is going to work in your favor is updating your resume and getting out there and find a better job. You posted on this site asking "Am I Safe?" and the resounding response has been NO! Yet, you seem determined to "ride it out". Don't. Seriously, don't be passive and let them demote and/ or lay you off. Please get control of your life and start looking for a new job. I know it is scary and hard to go out there in the job market after 17 years at one company, but you can do it. You're smart and you have valuable skill sets. There are so many resources and agencies that can help you for free. Many of us are have great jobs after our careers ended at BN. You can have a great post BN job also. I'll be thinking of you and wishing you all of the best as you start your new journey.

Even though this post by @YkltML1-2rzp was originally a reply to another thread and the post is a reply to another posters statements on that same thread, I found it to be a good representation of the sad condition that the company is in and the ill way in which things are done.

None of the stores have anything to brag about.

The damage has been done.

The word is out.

Cust service is bad.

Their reputation is in the past. Everyone sees what they are .

They brought it on themselves.

I don't see anyone on here bragging about their sales.

And how's that perfume selling- what an embarrassment!

They say positions weren’t eliminated in large volume stores. Our store made 14mil and they fired the digital, Newsstand,Digital and Rec manager. So what’s considered large volume? I thought 14 million was pretty good. Not enough for the Riggio / Corp greed machine !

If Head cashiers , Receiving managers, Digital leads, Bargain leads & Newsstand leads were all let go that’s 5 positions in 629stores. 5 times 629= 3,145.

In 2016 exact totals aren't know but 9 in our department were outsourced. At least 200 from what I know were in that same outsourced meeting. So 200 plus 1800+ in 2018 is 2000+ who lost their jobs. 2019 hasn't entered the equation yet. 4 CEOs in 3 years. It is what it no matter what kind of a spin Barnes and Noble says. Putting lipstick on a pig is still a pig.

During Christmas season, 2017, I was asked who I thought could run Receiving when I was on vacation. I told them who I thought could do a good job. They told me to “ mentor “ them. Teach them the ISO practices and my experience of 16 years.

Then, gee,2 months later, February 2018. I’m escorted out the door like I’d gotten caught stealing. All the hours wasted on Lencioni training. Being a team, TRUST, they said was the most important. All BS. They knew and did nothing to warn me. Had I been warned, I wouldn’t have told that I knew. I would’ve found another job, given my notice and left. You know, the honorable way to leave a job. That’s why I blame the SM and DM. While I know they were carrying out a corporate directive, they were sh--ty human beings how they carried it out.

Oh, my “replacement “ left just after I did. No notice, no nothing.Just stopped showing up. Karma at its finest. Me ? Had another job in 48 hours making more than I was , doing less strenuous work. SM callled me to come back as a part timer, for less money. I didn’t answer the question. I laughed and hung up. Karma at its finest.
