Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

The survivors

Now that the bulk of the layoffs is done, Oracle has a different problem at hand. In many cases entire teams have been decimated and at the same time business needs either remain the same or where they have been reduced the ratio employee to workload is very imbalanced.

So now what? In a scenario with disengaged, underpaid, and overloaded employees, what kind of compelling arguments will Oracle make so we don't just leave?

Of course, the answer is likely "nothing". Oracle has proven it only cares about investors, not customers and certainly not employees.

And with that in mind, a lot of us layoff survivors will soon be looking for the door.

The oracle layoffs were like a bolt out of the blue. No one expected this. The VP herself came down to India from US to personally break the news. It was ugly.

There is a third option: You are a year or two from retiring and it isn't worth the effort to look. I fell into that last category. I gambled and lost. But I know this and have nobody to blame for this gamble but myself. I planned for the worst so I am OK but I stayed only to run out the clock.

We "survivors" have our work cut out for us, no doubt, but those of us that remain our committed to servicing our obligations to customers. Hopefully Oracle recognizes the value in the employees it chose to retain. The cuts were enough that attrition from these levels would pose legitimate customer impacts.

"Employees stayed for long despite the lowest hikes, just because pf these human factors."

Oh, give it a rest. Getting tired of these "i'm making sacrifices for Oracle" nonsense.

You are there notwithstanding raises/promo because you are

  1. complacent

  2. can't do better

And NO job is stable. You think it's bad at Oracle? Try Netflix, Amazon, etc. They will let you go in a heartbeat for lack of fit.

Friend, the company has just shattered the myth that a job here is stable and that the life here would be on predictable lines. This certainly is not a routine layoff. Employees stayed for long despite the lowest hikes, just because pf these human factors. But such factors are now lifted.

So because of the uncertainties involved, it's better to have some Plan B. You will actually be foolish not to have one. Just by shutting the eyes , the mouse cannot wish the cat away.

If you are one of the lucky ones then it's time to brush up your resume and look for a new job instead of waiting for the next layoff possibly in may and September. Good luck!

"Survivors". Man, I love how dramatic people get. Dude, the company is letting people go to save money. People lost their jobs; they didn't die. You're not a "survivor", you're an employee that was deemed worthy to keep, at least for a while. Go do your job and prove them right.

I think that's Oracle's intention. Give people reasons to leave on their own. Decimating a group is a way to push the other people out. They want people to leave.

"a lot of us layoff survivors will soon be looking for the door."

I hope so. Especially those with 5+ years there already under their belt. But, the reality is, Oracle doesn't have a people leaving problem. It has a people staying too long problem.

Many complain of no review and or increases in some circles. I think that is deliberate to help persuade long-timers to move on.

It's not just a layoff, but a kind of extended period of anarchy/cluelessness, something I've never seen in my career.. The product's future course itself was unclear due to so many top level exits that preceded this layoff.. I don't think the survivors will stay behind due to this cluelessness and the way the people being laid off are chosen.. there'll be even more attrition in the future.. I think the competition should thank Oracle for this.

I assume attrition is part of the plan. After all the RIFs in recent years, Oracle must have a good idea of the attrition rate and how it changes. Attrition is cheaper than paying packages.

Of course it's a stupid approach because the best people leave. However, if you look at employees as interchangeable labor units, attrition is great, especially in areas that are being "de-emphasized."
