Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

John Repko's latest announcement

IT PMO & Portfolio Management:

I am pleased to announce some key changes to our capabilities and approach to managing IT programs and projects. It has never been more important for us to thoughtfully manage the priorities, resources, execution and funding associated with both our ‘run’ and ‘build’ IT work. We need to delicately balance the need to drive operational efficiency with modernization and innovation in order for us to effectively support our businesses going forward.

What do you guys think? What's new in these roles? To me he's putting another layer below the so called heads.

The rest of the message names people taking specific roles under him. I think that's why the poster cut off the email. But then names taking the roles do not inspire confidence. In fact, when most of them speak on conference calls you can almost hear the eye rolling of the participants.

More bureaucracy. More reports. More people who don't do any real work. They seem to think everything can be done by outsourcing. Wait and see how much work gets done without hand holding by the SMEs who have decided to leave or were cut.

Repko only manages Corporate IT, including IT infrastructure (GS). The business units have moved their IT into the BU cost structure. Since L&R makes money, their IT is safe, P&C IT will most likely be subjected to the next round of cuts.

Repko's next move is to outsource the management of infrastructure, followed by moving out of the data centers all the easy components over the next couple of years, at which point the cost of managing all the complex infrastructure will go up exponentially and by then he will be ready to move on as will most of AIG's L1/L2 management.

when you start hearing the words "managing IT" and "run" vs "build", it typically means outsourcing Be forewarned.

Initiative is good, if properly implemented it will do good for the company. Today it is very difficult to track where the money is being spend and in that many people are surviving.

Why can’t they be honest and forthright? I guess it is a reflection of the company values.
