Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

Automation is already here

We are seeing the orders come though now. They are still using offshore and will continue to do so for cheap labor. It is the onshore call centers that will be closed. A few will remain to do work that offshore cant handle or that they cant automate but a lot of call center reps in the US will be losing their jobs. Buildings sold. The shareholders are pushing to sale assets and legacy CTL copper. CenturyLink is in a class action lawsuit, by the shareholders, over the Level3 merger due to CTL lied about assets. So now CTL is in hot water. First the the extensive fines due to the 911 outage around Christmas and now the lawsuit. They are going downhill fast. Those that dont get offered a package soon will no doubt be let go later with nothing including only about 40% of their pensions. I am praying for an offer. I would take it and run! Unfortunately, nothing i can do about money in my pension until i am 55. Level 3, contractors and offshore run the company now.

OP is @YpqCekp-vluv, on point post.

According to the All Hands Meeting we had on Tuesday the automation orders are going to be the simple move, add, change and disconnect orders. Nothing complex yet. They are automating some of the provisioning and the scheduling aspects of all orders. Giving the customer a more hands on ability to place their own orders, repair tickets, checks status, communicate changes in orders and various other points. This will reduce work going to the business offices/call centers. As more updates and types of services are incorporated into the automation process it will continue to limit the need for as many call centers. Most call centers are probably noticing a reduction in order activity already. Once the Sales group implements the full capacity of the "quote to order" there will be another significant reduction.

We get orders that are called Simple orders.. they say the customer does everything by ordering online. Do those bypass call centers? We used to rarely see them a year ago but now the majority of orders are Simple Accounts. The NOHD handles them differently if the customer cancels because they are prepaid. Idk if those are 100% automation

Automation is the least this company needs to worry about.

Another example is when CenturyLink, a communications company, merged three dissimilar pension plans (CenturyLink Legacy, Embarq and Qwest plans). This merger combined 81,000 Qwest plan participants from a very well-funded plan at 91% with two plans funded in the 73-74% range. Qwest plan members lost hundreds of millions of dollars in asset protection.

No one said anything about leaving their job. Lol. I am here until the end. I've just took off my rose colored glasses and see things for what they are. The lawsuit and the fines are going to sink this company if they dont cut some major cost. Going to contract labor and automation is their solution. And automation IS HERE. Maybe not in your field but certainly taking jobs in call centers. The automation is bypassing the call center reps, keying the orders and sending them through the systems. That is a fact! Not all areas are affected yet but will be eventually. Offshore is working orders not automated. Yes, there are call centers onshore but eventually they will either be contracted or gone. Contractors are already taking over in the field. Things are changing and not for better of the employees. But I'm not going anywhere without a package if i can help it. Or at least my layoff papers. I'm not a dumb@$$

Your retirement is guaranteed by THE PENSION BENEFIT GUANATEE TRUST. If you look at GM...they get 25% because of their bailout, the State of California...CALPERS retirees took a 40% haircut 3 years ago and another 15% ( of the remaining) which means the retirees got to keep 40%. The PBGT only guarantees the benefit. It can be as little as 8% you can receive.

Don't be stupid...read the rules for retirement pensions. The company has a higher priority obligation to make payroll and pay payroll taxes. Retirement is a luxury.

I'm retired. I heard every body say "it's guaranteed" I handed my manager the law on the "guarantee" by the PBGT...

Western Electric..remember them? 8%. How about Enron? 8% if you met the rule of 80 according to the Law. Loose 2.5% for each # less than 80. For example YOS + AGE - 80

I just can't believe the young guys thinking if there is no money to pay retirees, that somehow the word Guarantee means money magically appears.

Entitled or stupid?

Automation is not here.

Lol, you’re going to leave your job over this. Because, someone is telling you too. Don’t be so gullible, do what’s best for yourself and how you feel. Everyone is in a different position. Don’t listen to others.
